Plants need light that hits the upper surface of the leaf for photosynthesis to occur, so side lighting is largely a waste. If you like paying for electricity for no real benefit, as there just isn't enough light intensity from "rope lights" to be of any benefit, sure, go for it, but don't expect any great improvements in growth or flower size. Cheers, Organoman.

Rope lights don't have enough power to provide much benefit so I do not think that is a good option. I did something similar using four KIND LED macro spectrum veg light bars with one light bar vertical in each corner of the tent in addition to my main lights above. With only main lights above I trim off the small bud sites on the bottom of the plant so it can focus its energy on the buds on top. With side lighting I left the lower buds in place. In the end the harvests were about the same weight. The difference was with the light only above I got mostly prime quality, big buds. With the side lights I got more popcorn and the prime buds were smaller. It was not worth the cost of the extra lights and electricity. The popcorn did not go to waste and was a good enough smoke and good for extracts but it is not as much fun. I get a big smile on my face when I grow a fatty the size of a child's arm but it's hard to get excited about a bowl of popcorn nugs.

If the plant is not right on the strip it won't provide any real benefits beside cosmetic. If it is inexpensive and you like to experiment give it a go. I just don't think they are strong enough for cannabis personally.
