Should I trim my flower?

Firstly I want bud that is as potent as possible. Secondly I want a big yield. I have heard that trimming will direct energy to buds. Is trimming something I should do right now, judging by how it looks? Or should I just let it grow? I have plenty of space, so that's not an issue

Plants can not "direct" energy, all energy is used equally wherever there is growth occurring. All of the plants energy is made in/by the leaves. so......... Maximum amount of healthy green leaves = maximum energy production = maximum growth. or......... less leaves = less energy being made = less growth. If you want maximum yield, leave as many leaves as possible. Potency is dependant on genetics, but the healthier your plant, the better it is able to express its genetics. Forget trimming and concentrate on keeping your plants as happy and healthy as possible and they will do the rest. Besides, if your plant would not need those leaves, it would not grow them in the first place! Stick with 18/6 too, this is optimum for cannabis. Hope this helps, Organoman.

Thank you all for your answers... I have written previously that I have used the "defoliation-technique". However, I thought defoliation was when you sprayed your flower with water + nutrients, and that trimming was when you removed leaves and that topping was when you cut off the very top of the plant. I have now learnt that defoliation is actually when you remove leaves from the flower. Thanks to your answers I will NOT defoliate her, I will let her grow normally. Also, since I am such a beginner then it is only logical to grow naturally in the start so I really learn this stuff. Thanks again!

@depplover49 NO leave it be mate un needed defoliation is detrimental to your desired efforts in getting a good yield Leaves create energy so less energy = less yield

Some of the things you have "heard" mostly relate to photo period plants which can recover from stressful training. Auto's are going to start flowering and finish on their fixed schedule, ready or not so doing less is often better. With auto's I begin low stress training early, about after the 5th node. I work to spread the plant out horizontally so more leaves are exposed to the light above which also leads to more bud sites. I do not top. Instead relying on LST to get the plant spread out and all the side branches at about the same height. I also do NOT defoliate. When the plant gets some size I remove leaves that get in the way of watering but my goal is to leave as many leaves as possible. The leaves are the solar collectors that power the plant so more leaves can lead to higher yield

The only type of trimming I would suggest is a single topping, or some plucking of leaves if they are in the soil line. I did not top my autos till I accidentally did it once on my deck and I got 3oz off that little plant. You want to do this when it is young, week 3 is pushing it but you could pinch off the main cola, then LST the side shoots to maintain the same canopy level. Autos are special and a lot of things can set them off, I would avoid anything in regards to defoliation this is more of something when you nail down some more aspects of growing, and its not for every grower or plant. Best to learn and experiment on photoperiods for this. Potency is all based on genetics, so that one is a bit outside of your grow environment. Yield is a 60/40 mix of genetics and environment. Keep em happy and they will reward you. Good Luck!

As it’s an auto, you’d better avoid HST. The plant won’t have enough time to recover as it starts flowering.
