Small plants, 3 gallon pots, and Pro Mix HP

Hi all, I've just moved baby's from solo cups to 3 gallon pots. I'm using Pro Mix HP. I know it's best to water until about 20% runoff with Pro-Mix HP, but giving these little guys ~5 litres each seems crazy, but I also don't want a big buildup. Been there.

I use ProMix as well... and I never water until there's runoff! I've got a couple of ladies in 3-gallon fabric pots who are now almost 5 weeks old and I'm giving them 1/2 gallon at a time... if there is any runoff, I wait for a half hour or so to see if the pot/soil soaks it back up - if not, then I pour off the excess in the saucer and I'm done. At the stage you're at, I would be watering perhaps a quart of water in ever-widening circles around each plant... I do this because I don't know what the roots are doing, where they're going and I want to make sure they're all getting something to drink (I also add microbes to strengthen the rootball and ensure they are able to take in any nutes they need - i.e., prevent lockout). In about a week or two, you can start soaking the whole pot. As always, wait until they're bone dry and the pot is super light before giving them another dose of water/feed! Good luck - they look great! 😊

Just had one more thought I wanted to share... as with all other plants, trees, bushes... you can tell at least how far the roots have spread outwards by how far the leaves have spread outwards... so make sure you're getting your water/nutes out to their "drip line" ...

Watering to run off is for coco. Don’t do that with soil. I use promix HP and added a bit of extra perlite to the soil. I like to give a good saturation and then not water for a day or two (almost to wilting) and then repeat. Watering practices take time to learn. When young don’t saturate the whole pot, you’ll need to build your roots up. Hope this helps. Feel free to stop by my page with any other questions
