How to slow growing

Topping, defoliating and reduce your light intensity. Not too many ways I can think of off the top of my head to slow down her growth in hydro. Soil you can keep in smaller container to slow em down.
Reducing feeding will slow her down but will probably cause deficiencies and reduce overall plant health.

Topped the same way with 2 different results?? First time growerI tried to top 2 plants in the same way but one main shoot stopped growing, but the other had two new growths come right out of the old stem, as well as 2 bushier side stems.
I am just wondering what I did differently and if both plants should work out fine.
