Outdoor UK cold frame

Just wondering if anyone has any experience growing in a cold frame in the UK? I'm wanting to try some autos in the garden using a cold frame similar to the one shown, maybe a bit taller. Obviously I will be doing a lot of training to keep them low.

I've grown in greenhouses, cold frames for decades. It does work. I only use them in the spring and fall to extend my seasons. I think your biggest issue will be autoflowers. I am sure they will grow and do OK but probably not produce record yield. You simply will not have enough light, long enough for them to really thrive. Raising them in a greenhouse is even worse because the glazing (glass, poly sheeting, mulit layer polycarbonate...) all block or absorb a significant portion of light. One sheet of clear glass or one layer of clear poly blocks about 10% of sunlight while two layer polycarbonate blocks about 20%. Best would be to start the plants near the end of this month. That will give them about 4 weeks to grow before the summer solstice (June 21) when the daylight will be it's longest. You want that long daylight to coincide with the plants flowering for maximum yield. Hopefully the weather will be warm enough that you can leave the lid open so the plants can get direct sun (not through glass).

Never used one myself as most my outdoor plants get grown out in the wild. Looks a good idea but as someone else mentioned you won't get optimum light. Autos are definitely my goto this year for outside as photoperiod don't get the time needed to make it to harvest. If you already have the cold frame it would be worth having a go, maybe start inside with fabric pots then Bury the pot in the ground when they are strong enough to go outside. Good luck, last year all my outdoor crops got hit with bud rot.

I think this could work and when the plants are big enough just pop off the glass top and let em grow if its an option. My grandpa had a unit like that made out of old fridge doors that where from a grocery store. glass and heavy metal. If you dig to deep they may drown if they are in soil. as excess water from rains will pool in there. Good Luck!

You wont have the height in there for even autos I grew autos and still around 2ft tall I tried outdoors before and really waste of time in England its just to cold plants need to 25° min so mybe we have 2 days this year good enough I'd give it a miss but try just dont expect to get anything decent from it even the colour of the buds rubbish I got 3 grams of a plant

I will also be digging down a bit to maintain a manageable height and lining the frame with some foil for light distribution.
