Sugahmama
Sugahmamastarted grow question 2 years ago
How to get rid of gnats with stuff I have probably at home ? They eating my plant alive. And what can I do to help the plant recover faster? I already use sticky traps and they work great, but some gnats still there... Thanks in advance

High Sugahmama, They hate dry soil and they hate to land on sharp things like sand. So you can choose to give less water and keep the first layer of soil dry or cover the soil with 1 cm sand. But I always kill them with Neem oil. I use this to kill almost every bug that is a threat for cannabis. When you got bugs in the soil just give water with Neem oil solution. And when you have bugs that live on your leaves just spray leaves with water and Neem oil solution. Goodluck! 😋

BTI BTI BTI BTI BTI BTI BTI !!! LOL BTi ... start using as preventative... "mosquito bits" are a top dress or you can go with dunks in a reservoir. i wouldn't suggest dunks if you have any plumbing or similar involved... it'll clog shit up. maaybe if they are in a teabag or something to keep it from breaking off and getting stuck in things (or in a water tank.. eventualyl it won't spray as the intake gets clogged with dusty bits) bacillus thurgingenisis or some shit like that.. - "israelis" subspecies = BTi .. so, any generic will be same thing if you can't find mosquito bits or dunks in your area. the peace of mind is worth it.. just about any larvea that may accidentally come in with the soil you purchase will be taken care of... if done from start, you won't see more than 1 or 2 things flying around over the months. 3rd vote for BTi :P

if you looking for at home options. easiest one is watering less and adding a layer of sand ontop of the substrate. gntas wont borrow thought it prevent them from laying eggs in the top soil. and the one that's do hatch out of the top soil will be trapped under all the sand and die. Need about a 1" layer. Other options that will require you to buy something are BTi like GrowingGrannie suggested below or beneficial nematodes, aka parasitic worms that eat the larva. I like the use of nematodes in my garden they work and keep working for all of the grow. Good Luck!

It's a simple solution that I've used - and it works REALLY REALLY well... Get yourself some Mosquito Bits and follow the instructions... you have to soak a certain amount of them in water, strain them out (I just put them into a strainer so getting them out of the water was easy) and then use that water for your plants. Fungus gnats live in the soil so simple sprays/sticky tapes/etc are not going to be effective... gotta kill them where they live along with their eggs/larvae... It sounds like you'll have to use this for a couple of weeks (you only use it ONCE a week I believe) but your problem will be gone. You should be able to find Mosquito Bits at any garden center ... Good luck!
