Foliage to dense?

Should I think about thinning some of the fan leaves? One of the plants is very dense with foliage. It’s also a bit more compact than the other.

Okay, so i didn't look through your diary at the start just these silly answers, (not the answers been silly, just the fighting) So, you are growing in Hydroponics, you have huge Fan leafs that are going to be a real issue in hydros, unless you leaf tuck or move them fan leafs I recommend taking the top 4 big boys, need to get light into the nodes/growth below. As they are huge and will block the growth below, as its hydro growth is rapid and energy you need to max out on and play it smart. So the big boys on top and pull and move where you can. BTW, you are doing a great job, 1st time with growing and with hydros, very impressive. Good luck & enjoy

That is the point of this Greatwolf. But, ppl that do put a lot of time into the contest answering Q and so on has to deal with been belittled by growers with "15yr experience", pity they don't have that experience dealing with ppl. I'm tired of DD picking on ppl. So what 40+ ppl can't get good advice just cause some1s running into issues and show their flaws Have you ever thought, because GG might have issues that she has studied hard to learn herself and is sharing what she learnt, just cause you can't see what she hasn't been able to put into affect doesn't mean she can't share it. I've learnt so much from having to deal with issues and reading, asking ppl like mouse and others Q. As for your plant mate. Its only into 3 weeks of flowering, it is okay to defol now, but if she's on her own or with 1 or 2 sisters just good ventilation and LST to open up areas, don't go cutting leafs, if you are going to take them, take it all, (the leaf) as cutting leafs imitates a pest attack to your plant and puts stress on it, very light stress but stress all the same.(if that's what you are talking about, there's so much crap going on here, you could start a drama series. but again, it isn't needed, but if she's part of a big family and air circulation is poor you can, and as they are photos they won't be a problem if growth slows a tad. But if you get 2 clip oscillating fans and have 1 above your canopy on the right say and 1 on the left underneath the canopy that circulation alone will be enough even in a high RH environment. Feel free to DM me if you have trouble finding an answer to your Q in all this mess. Good luck pal

Hey m0use, speak for yourself. Not everyone is answering questions for a contest. I, for one, am not signed up. I'm trying to share actual knowledge and experience gained from literally decades of trial and error (yes, I can admit to a lot of those, I've made most), through experiments. But I'm doing this because I want to help, not for free stuff. So I frankly don't care if they choose my answer, only that they're getting good help. Good luck

Hey, there is a lot of hot topic conversations going on in this question.. I will keep this simple and short. Please read the bottom bit of this response as it will shed some light on why tensions are so high. I don't think it is a good idea to defoliate at this time giving your plants size. Its not something I would do on my grows, however, this is your grow and if you wish to do that you can. I feel it might hurt your growth and stunt the little ones. I would allow it to grow out more and manage it from there. If you see anyone bashing others best to ignore them they are probably having a bad day and taking it out on others. Best Of Luck On Your Grow! ***disclaimer, multiple people are answering all questions as there is a contest called GOTM, when a user is selected as the answer they get a point. Let's calm down rhetoric on all sides and NEVER resort to name calling or disparaging one another's grows, okay. Let's just try sharing actual facts. Although this is my first grow on this site, I've been involved with growing medicinal cannabis since the early 80s, not continuous. But for last few years I've been growing 1 or 2 plants every 3 months. Can you truly say you know the full extent of someone else's grow experience? Or relevant gardening experience they may have? Let's not assume either, okay? Just trying to keep it peaceful and fun.

@dutch doobie, first of all your language is unacceptable, So what if she have just 6 grows, her grows are more valuable and better than yours, she is grower of the month for a reason and you are not, you are just jealous and pathetic with statements like this one, she have better results than you and buds look more smoother than yours,i can bet quality of her herb is even better,i know people like you who are relying on quantity and not quality. I have only 2 grows ,actually beginner at indoor but i laugh so hard on your retar*ed question about lamps for vegetation, lol, even children knows what lamp is used for vegetation and what for certain dimension of the grow box. people are here to learn stuff, not to argue about something,"help" i lf you can and if you can't or won't just shut your mouth, don't bully people without reason. I will explain and help you about that,if you have 2x2 tent lamp with 200-250 watt will be okay, for tent 2x4 you will need 400 watt lamp and everything above that you will need stronger lamp or even more lamps in your grow tent, blue light is for vegetation and red for flowering, since we are able to buy dual spectrum light, we don't need to change lamp spectrum anymore. Second of all, you are wrong about defoliation ,defoliation of the plant have also some of the disadvantages, when you "helping someone you should also tell complete information about certain question which you didn't. @GrnMtnganjaSome strains of cannabis produce more leaves than the others so you need to have a good look at your plant and think if it is worth defoliating some genetics also deal with stress better than others. The main disadvantages of defoliation are risk of stunning grow, increased chance of pest and infections , plant become stressed if too many leaves are removed,if you are inexperienced grower i advise defoliation only once during the veg and once during the flowering, otherwise your plant can become hemp what actually happened to @dutchdoobie because he defoliate his plant too much,do it when you think plant need more air flow and light but only with correct technique,if you are not sure about defoliation do just LST ,don't listen to the people that can't give you good enough advice to make a good decision. Happy growing pal!

If you are not sure, I recommend tucking the fan leaves with an early plant.

When you defoliate, you will see new growth take its place. But there is a cost. Rapidly growing those new leaves diverts energy that would go to growing the stem or branch. This is especially true during vegetative growth. Try it with clones or just identical seeds sometime. Some plants do grow too dense and need some leaves removed. Far more have problems during flowering. But this is due to strain susceptibility, humidity, and air flow. Good luck

High GrnMtnGanja, Grannie always gives bad advice. She is only growing cannabis for 7 months and lost half of her plants due bud rot and the plants that she did harvest are really pathetic. Even now with her new diarie she has a lot of deficiency problems again. Why defoliate in the Vegetative Stage? Prevent molt due moist!!! With a leafy plant, the inside can get very humid and even produce water droplets on the leaves. Defoliation can help prevent mold from growing on a leafy plant. Faster growth in the parts of the plant you want!!! you’re getting rid of unwanted parts of the plant, and the rest of the plant will start growing faster in response (since it doesn’t have to spread its energy, it can focus just on growing the parts of the plant you want). Better structure to take advantage of grow lights!!! Defoliation can help you create a better structure to start flowering by allowing you to create several main colas (prime bud sites), and get rid of colas that are unlikely to produce any significant amount of bud. So like I told you in my last comment. Use defoliation to create a good airflow. And to let the light from your lamp reach as many leaves as possible. Again... you cut the leaves that block light for more other leaves below. Or the one that is laying on another (or multiple) leaves! Happy Growing! 😋

Unless you have a problem with high humidity, I'd leave the leaves as long as possible. Energy does not travel far. Those fan leaves serve a purpose, building the stem and local branch, pumping nutrients. Tucking the leaves is a preferred solution. The plant will tell you when it's done with the leaf. Of course, if you have high humidity issues, that can lead to other problems, such as mold. Other growers will have other opinions. Understand how plants work. Watch how they grow. Draw your own conclusions. Good luck

She certainly IS dense - but I would never defoliate a plant this young! She needs all the leaves she's got for good growth! If you want, you can just tuck those big fan leaves underneath to get more light to bud sites or you could start some LST on her - but trimming off leaves???... please don't! She looks like she WANTS to be a monster - and she WILL be if you allow those leaves to keep feeding her! Good luck!

High GrnMtnGanja, You can cut the leaves that block light for more other leaves. And you can cut the leaves that lay on eachoter (the one at the bottom will probably be wet) for airflow. Those are the only reasons to cut leaves. Do not overdo it because the leaves are the engine for your plant. You can always cut away more later but you can not paste them back! 😜 You can also cut a few that you think is nessesary and then send me a private message with picture then I can advice. Or just ask a new question here. Happy Growing! 😋
