I have a custom breed that is currently under attack outdoors by catapillars can anyone identify and possibly what treatment should be used. Southern midwestern USA. One photo is of the catapillar and one is of the damage they only attack the buds they leave the fan leaves alone.

I had a lot of these cause a ton of trouble last season. I would advise strongly against spraying anything this late in flower. Especially with the open wounds the caterpillars are making and your flower is already quite solid and any moisture that gets inside will stay there for a while and add to the bud rot the caterpillars are already causing. Scouting is difficult, but a safer way to go. They tend to like digging into the bud and then eat the stalk and is difficult to find them inside the flowers without manhandling your plants. The parts where damage has been done (2nd pic) will end up rotting, so unfortunately the best thing to do is chop them before the mold spreads to other parts of the plant. Either way, these guys are difficult to deal with and you will probably lose a big portion of your crop.

What would be a good early way to prevent them before they get to lay the eggs. Stopping the moths and butterflies would be an impossible task but is there a treatment that is safe that can be used during the egg cycle or or possibly a way to deture them from the plants all together.

So then I am kind of either looking at harvesting early or manually pick through the buds to find them since its so late in flower and still ultimately harvesting early.

Get yourself some BT... bacilius thuriengiensis ... will take care of catepillars and anything else that like to chew on your leaves... they take one bite, decide to eat lunch elsewhere and go off to die... Good luck!
