I choose emitters based on how much maintenance i expect to do.
misters have much smaller holes. if you are putting nutrient water through it, it's going to clog up fairly fast.
The ones with a 'torturous' path are probably good options. I went with the little sprinkler head things with 6 or 8 small streams of water that come out in each direction. I can take a toothbrush to it every couple weeks and not get any buildup.
If it's an irrigation setup, no worries if you 'slowly' water it.. you want good spread of the water but if it has to run 5-10minutes to get the job done, that's no porblem. It'll get wet eventually even if they slowly do it -- some benefits to that too = less compaction of soil, for example.
A lot of emitters requires 10-20 psi. Don't get an aquarium pump as they have low psi even if their flow rates are high. I used "Hydroloc's" kits to size the pump i needed for the number of emitters i wanted to run. Their kits are a goood reference point for that. Also, if you go the mister style, their kits may be perfect for you, too. They come with a cone that sites on top, holds 2 emitters, contains their spray, and reduces evaporation from pot.
*** oops looks like they may have gone out of business? But, there are still youtube videos and such that show the kits. Might give you some useful DIY ideas.
anyway the 3-5gpm 40-60psi pumps are the better way to go because it gives you more options as far as which drippers you can use. if you settle on some drippers that require little to no psi, you can go with a cheaper aquarium pump. Even the slow drippers like some 1gpm emiterr requires some psi to function properly. sometimes it's tough to find those specs/requirements in the product listing. might have to go to the manufacturer's site like "rain bird" etc.
