Some growers keep plants in the vegetative stage for more than 6 weeks. What is the point?

Oh thought of another one.. excessive training. Not everyone is out to just push out maximum yield as quick as possible. Some folks enjoy the growing process, like to experiment with their plants, high stress training, and recovery time extend your veg period.

I can think of a few reasons that pertain to my grow and some others that are probably more universal: 1) sent away for work for a while, wasn't about to make the wife deal with flowering plants as that's the make or break period. 2) ended up with 13 males out of 16 seeds. Needed extra veg time to fill out the tent. I'm not about to flower half a tent. Solution is up pot and veg longer until the tent is full. 3) not my personal issue, but many people have plant count limits. If I wanna pump out 1kg+ with 4 or less plants I'm gonna veg longer. 4) The plant is having deficiencies or other problems. If you flip to flower when plant is already struggling you might as well just toss away the nutes, time, and power. There is a good chance the plant will not recover and the deficiency/issue will progress, or it will slowly recover and your harvest and quality will suffer. 5) waiting for space to flower.. self explanatory, no room in flower tent, so keep them in veg until there is. Thats a few reasons I can think of, I'm sure there are many more.

Also, i had to delay my 2nd cycle 1 week due to previous grow going a week longer than I expected. I would have preferred to flip at day 35. Coincidentally, my humidifier died and it took a while to get a replacement wick. The growth was severely retarded due to excessively high VPD. So, I ended up needing that extra time to get them growing properly again. Shit happens.

Assuming the pot is big enough, you get a bigger plant, lol.. fill a bigger space. Is it more efficient to do smaller plants and greater quantity? Yes, up to a point, but not every decision is about what is 'best'. Sometimes it's just what you prefer or want to do. Just as some people use inferior substrates that come with more risk or impede roots more than necessary etc etc. Yield is not necessarily better with a bigger single plant vs many plants. that would be user-error caused. Indoors with ambient co2, no matter how you do it, the rough ceiling is going to be 50-70 grams per sq ft. CO2 is the limiting factor. It is the backbone of nearly every molecule the plant must build or replicate for maintenance, growth and ripening... so, law of conservation of mass applies. less available carbon = less growth in all normal contexts. I could shave 2 weeks off my vege phase by doing a SOG and maintain my yield. I don't want to deal with 2-3x as many pots. That comes with more work and i'd have to remake my irrigation system and buy smaller pots etc etc... too much of a pain in my ass to save 10-15 usd/year. I don't use my big lights until the last week of vege, anyway. So, 2 fewer weeks while using lower-wattage lights is not as big of a savings as most think. Also, i don't grow year round so saving a week or two of time doesn't add value for me. Individual context matters.

I do it for a couple different reasons. I have a perpetual set up it works out perfect for me to do 8 weeks veg or more and then 8/9 weeks for flowering. But i like training my plants pretty intensely and that adds veg time. Ive started wanting to try and do quicker turn arounds with veg but then my perpetual would be different and my veg tent would be empty for a month at a time. I pop more genetics as soon as there is room in the veg area. But then have to wait atleast 4 weeks before i have room in my flower tent. I alternate two plants every month so im harvesting 2 plants every month and add 2 plants to veg and 2 more to flower. People also do it for yield. or if you have a legal plant count but a big space to fill up, it may take you a longer time to fill your canopy with only 4 plants if in a 5x5

Honestly nothing more than style. The math does not math for people seeking bigger yields. The answer commercially and at home has been and will always be to take clones for homogeny in the room and then form whatever footprint you have (2x4,4x4,5x5,etc.) with clones to match the footprint with minimal veg. For example, my homie that is a 90s hydrotek guy, he will grow a single plant into a 4x4. The bottom stems are so thick he gives the main stem to a friend for his dog. Once dried they last the pit bull a few months. Longer than a bone. This is awesome in theory but at the end of the day I can turn over the exact same 4x4 footprint weeks if not months sooner just with this concept. Now start minimizing inputs and purposefully growing the smallest nugs you can, and I'm sure someone will drop out of the sky with a commercial license for you. lol Some people enjoy training their plants (manifolding is fun, getting a perfect SOG/SCROG is fun, any type of topping is fun and educational, etc.). Plant limits are the only justifiable reason that is not preference-driven for this, unless she is a mother.

Look at my oldskoolkool diary and you'llk see why.The smallest was just over 7oz and the biggest just over 8oz.You don't get that from 2wks seedling growth and 4wks veg which I guess is what you mean. That is the min time needed to grow a half decent amount of roots and braches.Iv grown with 2wks seedling and 2wks veg then flower on a perpetual harvest with 81 plants cropping 9 every few weeks, than putting another 9 seedlings back in.Yielding around 2-3oz.This was 20yrs ago.

(More than 6 weeks of veg can result in plants that are too large for an indoor grow.) Its more like giving it time to build a frame, to reach maturity. Way I see it is veg is constructing the framework, flower is making the bud. If the framework doesn't exist prior to bud development then it's limited. You want big cola longer than your arms? Need 6 weeks or more. growdiaries.com/diaries/187226-grow-journal-by-ultraviolet The point.

Some veg longer so the plant hits actual maturity , stronger structure, preflowers, better transition into bloom. If it’s a regular, it also gives you time to sex it before flipping. More veg time means better training, bigger roots, and more yield if your setup can support it. All comes down to your goals and space

Hey there great question… I personally like to sog and flip my plants to flower soon as they are getting sturdy maybe around day 30 to 40 from the time they pop out the soil Some reasons people veg plants for a long time might be like they plan to take the plant outdoors for summer and get a giant tree Also some states in the USA have plant count limits and some states only allow like 2 or 3 plants so they grow the plants big so they can fill a larger space and get way more bud than 2 or 3 small plants Also someone could be keeping the plant as a mother and taking cutting from it and after it’s a few months old they just flip it and start a new mother plant One really big reason is when you grow big plants it gives them time to get a huge root system and you can grow huge buds I’m sure there is many more reason but that’s a few Just remember every person has a different life situation and there probably just trying to evolve to whatever situation they have
