As watering many thing must be learned...
First I would put something over the soil to retain Humidity and keep the soil protected from the sun. Like peat moss, coco coir, perlite, hidroton. So the roots can spread on this surface soil.
I love to water on the borders, so the water run the whole soil by the sides and stop on the bottom plate (*). The roots must Seek water to develop, if you water the base of the plant it wont need to develop much further to get water.
If you are with the plant it's important to water only when she ask for water, and not when """top soil is dry""". My top soil get dry in 1 day, but if I don't water some of my plant for 4 days they stay the same, meaning they have enough water for these days with dry top soil.
Overwatering make the plant small, weak and fragile. Less water is more.
