It varies every time to some extent... the more controlled your climate, the mose consistently sized buds and density, the less it varies, but still varies a bit.
The point is you need to learn how ot ride this bike. It is not a one-size-fits-all
Dry... put in a container and see how it feels 5-10 hours later... Moisture evaporates faster off surface than it can 'even out' form moisture deeper in plant material. So, the surface dries and feels dry, but the bud still contains too much moisture, intially. When you seal it, evaporation slows/stops and the moisture evens out in the plant material. If it's soft on the outside or worse noticeably moist, take it out of the container for more drying...
rinse and repeat.. a hygrometer in your container can help.. if you see moisture continuing to rise, that's telling you there's too much moisture in the buds. If it stays steady, you know it is at equilibrium with temp/rh conditions. "Equilibrium" may or may not be the target, but it'll tell you the net-change occuring, which tells you if drying is 'done'.
you put the same buds in a different temp/rh and it'll reach a new equilibrium - gain or lose moisture. the key is that it's not releasing a ton of moisture when you seal it and then you end up with moldy buds. 2-way humidipaks don't eliminate the concern but give leeway for error. There are upper and lower limits to how much moisture it can absorb or releast (can tell by the weight of the pack... if it maxes out weight, it can't absorb any more.. it's a 1-way humidipak at that point.. max weight you'd have to learn or find a reference.. some percentage above its listed pack weight.. e.g. a 7g boveda may reach 10g? if that's the case it can only hold 3g of water above it's starting 7g weight. if it starts at 5g due to recent use, you got 5g of upper headroom -- no idea of their dry weight but same way to figure it out... let it happen and weigh it)
Can always expose the 2-way packs to moisture to get them in the 'center' again. Exposure to any RH higher than their specification will add weight.
you'll get a better feel for it over time.. you just have to check more often before that point. This will be different for you, but relative to my typical temp/rh and process, my buds 'feel' dry and then i know i need 12-24 horus beyond that before i put into a sealed container.
When you initially fill a container, stick to 75% full... burp once a day to ensure any remaining moisture is released. Once that process is done, then you can fill up 100%. Air is your enemy at that point. LEss air around the buds = less degredation over time. This is why N2 works. Suck out atmosphere, replace with N2 gas and it doesn't interact with the material as O2 does. Also, takes care of both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria growth. Not recommending it unless you store for excessively long periods of time but illustrates a cause and effect. Light, heat, 'air' is your enemy in regard to storage.
You only have to be super anal about it if you store week for 1+ years. if you smoke it within 3-6 months, merely keeping a contain full and not constantly exposing it will be plenty good enough. Open it up once/month to avoid it turning brown, though some like that... but if you refill a smoke jar, occasionally, that'll probably take care of it.
