The Grow Awards 2026 🏆

Lamp distance to canopy, dialing it in.

I usually use the manufacturer's recommendations on lamp distance from the top of the plants/canopy, but its different for some cultivars. Some need a little more distance at 100% some can take it a little closer than the recommendation. What signs do you look for to dial it in?

Good question — the manufacturer numbers are a good starting point, but the plants always have the final say. What I watch for when dialing in light distance: Too much light: Leaves start praying hard, then taco or curl up at the edges Tops look pale or washed out (light bleaching) New growth gets tight and slightly stressed Leaf temps feel hot compared to ambient Too little light: Plants stretch more than expected Leaves stay flat or slightly droopy Slower growth, larger internode spacing Sweet spot signs: Leaves are gently praying, not clawing Strong color without paling Tight internodes and steady growth No heat stress at the canopy I usually move the light a few inches at a time and wait a day or two before adjusting again. Different cultivars (and even phenos) absolutely tolerate different intensities. In the end, I trust plant response over charts every time 🌱

Hey Buddy that’s a really good observation and you’re absolutely right: manufacturer distance charts are only a starting point, not a rule. Those recommendations assume “average” conditions, but plants don’t grow in averages. Cultivar, health, environment, and growth stage all change how much light a plant can actually use. This is where PPFD matters. ⸻ Why PPFD matters more than distance Lamp distance doesn’t tell you how much usable light the plant is receiving — PPFD does. Two setups can have the same distance and deliver very different light levels depending on: • Fixture efficiency • Lens / diode layout • Reflectivity of the space • Plant height and canopy shape PPFD measures what the plant actually receives at canopy level. ⸻ Signs I look for to dial it in (without instruments) Plants will tell you a lot if you watch closely: Signs light is too intense: • Leaves praying hard, then flattening or taco-ing • Tips bleaching or turning pale • Upper leaves feeling dry or stiff • Slower growth despite “good” conditions Signs light is too weak: • Stretching internodes • Leaves staying flat or drooping • Lower sites losing vigor • Plant looks healthy but underperforms Signs it’s dialed in: • Consistent, relaxed praying • Healthy green new growth • Tight internodes (for that cultivar) • Strong side branching • Steady metabolism (water + nutrient uptake) That “happy praying” posture is one of the best visual indicators. ⸻ Why cultivars react differently Different genetics have different: • Leaf thickness • Chlorophyll density • Metabolic speed • Heat and light tolerance Some cultivars want high PPFD and thrive under it. Others hit saturation earlier and get stressed if pushed the same way. That’s why distance charts can’t be universal. ⸻ About measuring PPFD (game changer) If you don’t already measure PPFD, it’s worth considering. A proper PPFD meter: • Removes guesswork • Helps you repeat results • Makes dialing in much faster • Lets you adapt light to each cultivar instead of forcing the plant to adapt They’re not cheap, but they’re getting more accessible — and once you use one, it’s hard to go back to guessing by distance alone. Even knowing “rough zones” (veg vs flower PPFD ranges) helps tremendously. ⸻ Big picture PPFD isn’t about maxing numbers — it’s about matching light intensity to the plant’s ability to use it. Environment, temperature, CO₂, nutrition, root health — they all determine how much light a plant can handle. Light is just one piece of the system, but it’s a powerful one when understood. You’re already doing the most important part: watching the plant instead of blindly following charts. PPFD just gives you a clearer language for what the plant is telling you 🌱 Growers Love my friend and my apologies for the long reply but i felt this one needed a proper explanation 💚💚💚

I use the photone app on my phone to get generalized readings. But signs from the plants will be drooping instead of praying if the lights too strong. But this isn't always accurate because they will droop for many reasons. Long term signs will be yellowing on the tops of the leaves and eventually necrosis. Too high heat from the light will cause leaf edges to raise

At first the leaves mood , leaves should be like praying for the light making like a V shape. Droopy leaves is a sign a photohinibition when you know that your water schedules and environment conditions are right. Then the temperature at canopy level, 21°C is the perfect temperature. And finally and diagnosis of the petioles leaves and leaves stems for purple color , meaning that your plant is burning magnesium and plant photosynthesis process is on a high level. Spotting lil tiny rust spots on the leaves when you know that your magnesium supplements is right, means that the symptoms are very advanced
