Old seeds

Quick question: how long can old seeds take to germinate? Using paper towel method at 25°C, now day 10. Paradise Seeds popped in 3 days (now 6 days under light, doing great). Others show no signs. Red Mandarine 3–4y, rest 8–10y. Still hope or done?

Ouch, 10 days is definitely pushing it, even for old seeds. With those 8-10 year old beans, the shell can get super hard and tough for the embryo to break through. Since you're already at day 10, honestly, the chances are slim, but if you really want to save them, you could try a "hail mary" move: give them a very gentle scuffing with some sandpaper or carefully crack the edge with a tweezer (scuffing is safer!). Sometimes that helps the water finally get inside. The Red Mandarine (3-4y) should have popped by now at 25°C. If they haven't turned mushy yet, there’s a tiny bit of hope, but I wouldn't bank on it. Usually, if nothing happens after 14 days, they're unfortunately duds. Finger crossed that one of them still surprises you! **Happy Growing Growmie 🌱**

10 days is a long time to not see anything. Paper towel method is not that good as another stated. Wanna know if they are viable? Get a shot glass and fill with water. Drop a seed in. Your choice if you wanna add a drop of protekt (was by dyna gro, called super thrive now, a silicone additive to help stimulate roots). If you dont see a tap root after 4-5 days, pretty safe bet its no good. Im using 1.5yr old seeds and they pop in about 2-3 days. Dont have to use the additive either. If a tap root does form, all ya have to do is pour the shot glass into the hole you make in the medium and cover it up. Super simple! Paper towel method if gets too dry can damage roots. If roots take off, can grow into paper towel. Ive experienced both, but was able to still save/use them. Just had me figure out a better way. Shot glass has been the easiest I've found so far. Just look in and see if its popped the tap root. No disturbing the root. Pour out when ready and a shot glass worth of water wont over water your medium that should already be moist when you plant the seed. Just my thoughts, Best of Luck! Happy Growing!

Paper towel method is not the best for old seeds… particularly these days, you don’t know what kind of chemicals texture agents they use to make the paper… I will suggest you to use sphagnum peat pellets enriched with mycorrhizae to start old seeds

I know for a fact you can germinate seeds from decades ago, as far as if it's viable or not this is what I like to do and I get like 60% germination rate on really old beans. I scratch the outside with a really fine sand paper, then add a few drops of peroxide into a small container and pop the seeds in, of they are viable they will pop in no more then a 3 day period, it can sometimes takes up to 4 maybe maybe even 5 days but if it's not then that, trash it, it's garbage.

depends on storage... depends on the seed. I have some homebrew fem seeds that still sprout at ~100%. They are 5 years old. I don't store them in any particular manner, either. Could be lucky with that batch of seeds, too. regardless, you give them the same amount of time because the cutoff is when they rot in the wet soil, which takes a similar amount of time whether it's a viable seed or not. Day 10 is nearing the end... i'd wait until day 14 because it's not resource intensive... if scheduling is an big concern and even a couple days can matter, i'd start more immediately. if you ever have concern about viability but a keen interest in the strain, plant more than you need... i always plany ~200% of what i need. I don't mind throwing out some duds and even a couple good plants if it ensures 8 robust plants. it won't gaurantee you always avoid dudds, but definitely reduces the proportions of duds and a genetic defect won't impact production.

It's magic 👌😜
