You can use a trellis in more than one way. So, are you getting out of it what you want to get out of it? If so, you are using it correctly. No need to be a nazi about how it's used or following the herd how to use it. From what i see, most people overgrow their gardens and then prune off a shit ton of wasted time and effort due to not being able to visualize the amount of growth that occurs after flip to 12/12. Some people use it to train things horizontally - affixing it to the trellis as it grows. This can save vertical space and gets everything into position before you let it grow vertically. A trellis can also be used for less severe training and mostly to support limbs while still spreading them out a bit simply by growing through the "right" square. It takes a few grows to get a process down that you'll like. I use my trellis differently than the first grow i incorporated one. It was a bit awkward and didn't make best use of it.. You can see how that progressed from earlier to newer diaries (2023-2 and newer, if i recall, maybe 2024-1, but 2026-1 is best example of current process -- the "-2" diaries are impacted by schedule / logistics). Have a goal. With goals, you can make a plan. e.g. I want 2.5-3 colas per sq ft. I figure out how many per plant then make it happen using the trellis. The last several grows i've been tweaking timing of when i let it grow vertically relative to flip to 12/12 to reduce how much growth i have to prune off... pruned off growth is wasted time and resources. You really don't need more than 3 vertical colas per sq ft to maximize yield. I can spend an extra 1-2 weeks in vege phase getting everything spread out to their exact position, or i can take advantage of the 3+ weeks of vege growth that remains after flip to 12/12 and make use of that growth while pruning off less waste. Basically i just train the top most branches horizontally (they obviously hit scrog first) until the remaining branches catch up (rinse repeat until all are level), at which time i can flip to flower and simply bend things outward the last few inches to achieve the same canopy size and yield, otherwise. 2026-1 diaries are the best example of what i try to do. It may be a 5x10 area comments having trouble with that concept, bwahaha), but only 4x8 is used (32-35 sq ft - a person commenting on that diary had trouble understanding that concept, bwahah). You can see the number of squares empty around each plant at flip then completely fill in by week ~4 of flower (diary week 11?). There are also progression pictures of the growth after flip to flower and until vege growth ceases. It took 2-3 grows to get the timing down in a way that works for most plants... only the oddball super-stretchers require some HST later on. a plant will easily double in size with good growth rates. Might as well make use of it, instead of cutting a bunch off due to overgrowth. you may not end up doing it exactly like me, but be systematic, make slight adjustments over time, and it'll be standardized procedure requiring zero thought or effort to implement after that. Methods that result in same yield with less vege time are superior ways to do it.
