Introduction - Week 00 Summary - Ensign's log, stardate 100734.43, Back with another beginner grow attempt! As the harvest from my last attempt finishes curing ('NYC Diesel Auto' by 'ILGM'), time to start a new grow! This time, attempting to grow some 'Fuel D.OG' by 'Seedsman.' I have a total of 5 beans, but I'm hoping to make it through with the first two. This will also be the first full grow under the Mars-Hydro FC-6500 (upgraded from a TSW-2000). Quite curious to see what she can do! If all goes well, this grow will cover another full seed to harvest! The beginning of the week started off with a seed soak of 2 beans. Also did a tent cleaning along with an environmental reset. Midway through the week (2 days later), both seeds germinated and were promptly planted into the EarthBoxes! By the end of the week (3 days later) both seeds have sprouted and have finally begun growing upwards! Noticing a bit of brown dust build up around EarthBox1 (EB1). There is almost none on EB2. This could be from harmless soil mites because the sprouted seedling seems unaffected (she's actually taller than the seedling in EB2). Regardless, will continue to check back daily. As long as the plants are healthy, I don't mind a bit of dust. Next week, plan to do an IPM spraying which may help with the overpopulation of bugs in EB1. Steady as she grows Ensign.. Set a course for another harvest. Engage! 🖖 [START OF WEEK 00] ========================================================== WEEK 00 - Germination 02/13/23 → 02/19/23 [1st entry: 02/14/23] [germination date: 02/16/23] This Week's Estimated Goals ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DLI: 12.0 mol/m2/d PPFD: 185 μmol/m2/s VPD: 1.00 kPa This Week's Meter Readings & Averages ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DLI: 9.14 mol/m2/d PPFD: 141 μmol/m2/s VPD: 1.05 kPa Soil %: [18.2, 26.0, 15.0, 27.3] ========================================================== Day 01 - Monday - 02/13/23 - Total Days: N/A ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: N/A - Humidity: N/A - VPD: N/A - Soil %: N/A ----------------------------------- --- [No log entries for today] Day 02 - Tuesday - 02/14/23 - Total Days: 001 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 69.3°F [20.7°C] - Humidity: 62.0% - VPD: 0.90 kPa - Soil %: N/A ----------------------------------- - [10:39]: Ahhh yeah! --- NEW GROW! --- Ensign420 logging back in with another grow! --- First grow of 2023!! --- Going to attempt to grow and harvest some 'Fuel D.OG' by 'Seedsman' --- If the linage is true, then these will be some fire genetics! --- Chemdog (Sour Diesel x OG Kush) and Fuel OG (Diesel x HeadBand) are the parents so extremely stoked to give these beans a go! --- Have 5 seeds total, but hopefully I won't need all of them to make it to harvest. --- Wow! --- As far as seed germination, this will be both seed attempt #50 and #51 --- Also this will be my first grow starting off with two beans! --- Two EarthBoxes (EB01, EB02). --- One seed per EarthBox. What can possibly go wrong? --- As usual, going to germinate in a cup of distilled water (heated to ~85°F). --- Also, this grow will be using Ecowitt soil moisture meters (WH51). I started using these towards the end of the last grow, but this will be my first full grow using these meters. --- Being able to quantify the soil moisture levels will hopefully be helpful in preventing overwatering. --- Don't frack this up Ensign. --- Okay! --- Let's go! - [10:53]: Cleaned a shot glass (with isopropyl alcohol) and filled it with 25mL of distilled water. --- Picked out 2 random beans and dropped them straight in. --- [Both seeds floated] --- Placed the shot glass onto a towel. --- To help maintain warm and stable temps, a heating mat is being used (preheated and underneath the towel). --- Covered the glass with a black opaque plastic bowl. --- Then covered the bowl with towels and foam. - [11:07]: Set the heating mat's thermostat to a warm 90°F --- Current temps are at 84.7°F --- With the colder ambient room temperatures, water temps should be around a warm 85°F --- Ahhh yea! --- The germination process has officially begun! --- Hopefully I'll be seeing tap roots in about 2-3 days! --- Grow strong my little ones! - [11:42]: Okay time for a deep clean and full reset of the tent! --- First removed the ratchet drying lines from the grow light. --- Then unplugged and removed everything that was on the floor of the tent. --- Decided the toss the old Exhale CO2 bag. It's been two grows and am pretty sure is not producing anymore supplemental carbon dioxide. --- Gave the top vents and carbon filter a dusting. --- Disconnected the carbon filter from the exhaust fan and placed a carbon filter cover over the vent. Also covered the filter's vent with plastic wrap. --- Cleaned the humidifier and gave the heater and oscillating clip fan a wipe down. --- Swept and vacuumed the floor. --- Also slightly re-organized the cables and trellis (which I have yet to even use). - [13:00]: Made some cleaning solution. --- Filled a measuring cup with a cup of distilled water. --- Added 7ml of Dr. Zymes' Eliminator --- Mixed the solution and poured it straight into a spray bottle. - [13:13]: Gave the tent's walls and floor a wipe down with the solution. --- Great! --- Returned everything back into the tent (minus the Exhale CO2 bag) and reconnected the heater and humidifier. --- Filled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). - [13:33]: Also placed both EarthBoxes back into the tent. --- EarthBox01 (EB01 - original) to the left and EarthBox02 (EB02 - newest) to the right. --- Then re-positioned the soil moisture sensors. Meters 01-02 into EB01 and 03-04 in EB02 --- Time to warm the tent up! - [17:18]: Adjusted the tent's environmental controls. --- Plugged in the heater and humidifier's controller and adjusted the target TEMP/RH values from 59°F/57% to 75°F/65% - [18:58]: Within the AC Infinity App, --- Created a new 'Vegetative [18/6]' Automation Schedule for the Exhaust Fan. --- Set the START/END time to 12:00am/12:00am --- Set this schedule to 'Auto Mode.' --- Adjusted the exhaust fan's temperature HIGH/LOW values to 85°F/65°F --- Adjusted the exhaust fan's humidity HIGH/LOW values to 70%/45% --- Adjusted the exhaust fan's speed MIN/MAX values to 03/08 --- Done! --- Will adjust these settings later as needed. Day 03 - Wednesday - 02/15/23 - Total Days: 002 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 70.7°F [21.5°C] - Humidity: 53.9% - VPD: 1.15 kPa - Soil %: N/A ----------------------------------- - [10:54]: Quick tent check! --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Environment seems okay, but without any plants growing in the tent, struggling with RH a bit. - [11:06]: Adjusted the tent's environmental controls. --- Adjusted the heater and humidifier's controller target TEMP/RH values from 75°F/65% to 75°F/60% Day 04 - Thursday - 02/16/23 - Total Days: 003 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 72.1°F [22.3°C] - Humidity: 59.4% - VPD: 1.07 kPa - Soil %: [19, 26, 11, 28] ----------------------------------- - [09:48]: Tent check up! --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). - [11:47]: Adjusted the tent's environmental controls. --- Within the AC Infinity App, --- Adjusted the exhaust fan's controller speed MIN/MAX values from 03/08 to 02/08 --- Plan to check the on the germinating seeds this evening! - [16:20]: Checked the seed soaking cup! --- Ah yea! --- They both popped! --- Always an incredible sight to behold! --- Wow! Each root is about an 1/8" long. Perfect! --- Tap roots for both seeds look white and healthy! --- Seeds #50 and #51 are off to a great start! --- Okay! --- Time to start the planting process! - [16:32]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: --- 20% - [CH01 EB1 - grow bag] --- 26% - [CH02 EB1] --- 19% - [CH03 EB2 - grow bag] --- 18% - [CH04 EB2] --- Soil moisture looks about even with a bit more hydration in EB1. - [16:56]: Removed the soil moisture sensors and set them in a cup for later. --- Also removed and disposed the plastic mulch covers. --- The top soil looked pretty hydrated with a bit of bokashi fuzz blooming. There was more in EB2, but EB1 also has some. --- Mixed and loosened the top soil. --- Moisture felt pretty good! --- Dug a hole in each EarthBox. --- Mounded the excess soil towards the middle of the EarthBox. --- Similar to last time, going to be planting straight into paper grow bags filled with fresh BAS Light soil! --- Using dry soil again and will saturate using a wetting solution. --- Anyways, time to prep the bags! - [17:35]: Using scissors, I trimmed 2 small paper bags down to ~3.5" tall. For more structure, I doubled up on the sides of the bag and rolled the edges. --- Took the 'modified' paper bags and filled them with about 2.25 solo cups of BAS Light soil. --- Patted the top soil down. --- Time to inoculate with some Great White! - [17:58]: Sprinkled in 1/16tsp of Great White into each hole. --- Gave each hole a misting of distilled water before placing the grow bags into each hole (~0.25cup each). --- Gave the area a firm press to tuck the bags in. --- Great! --- Time to make a wetting solution! - [18:25]: Filled a measuring cup with 1 cup of distilled water. --- Added 1/64tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Added 1/32tsp of Horticultural Aloe --- Added 1/16tsp of Mycrobe Complete --- Mixed the solution and poured half straight into a spray bottle. - [18:34]: Did an initial soil wetting by misting the top soil of each grow bag with about half of the wetting solution (~0.25cup each). --- Mixed the top soil of each grow bag with a stick to help hydrate the dry peat moss. --- Not making any holes again. Only made a shallow and wide indentation. --- Going to be inoculating the roots of the new sprouts with some Beauveria Bassiana. --- This beneficial fungus will help protect the plants from invasive bugs by releasing spores that cause muscardine disease in insects. Upon contact the spores will germinate and grow inside the host bug until it is literally consumed from the inside. The body of the dead bugs infected with the disease will spawn more spores. Pretty gnarly, but this suppose to be a very effective biological insecticide. - [18:46]: Sprinkled 1/32tsp of Beauveria Bassiana Plus Powder into the center of each indentation. --- Okay! --- Time to finally plant the sprouted seeds!! - [18:59]: Using a clean dab tool, I gently scooped each seed out of the shot glass and placed them on top of the inoculated area with the tap roots sideways. --- Sprinkled and covered each seed with a bit of dry BAS light soil. --- To secure each germinated seed, gently patted the surface down. --- Slightly misted the top of each grow bag with more of the wetting solution (~15 sprays). --- Misted the rest of the solution onto the top soil of both EarthBoxes. --- Time to add a mulch layer! - [19:11]: Added a layer of dried rice hulls. --- Using some BAS Rice Hulls, I evenly covered the top soil of each grow bag (~4tbsp each). --- Then misted the rice hulls of both bags with 1/4cup of distilled water (~1/8cup each). --- This time around, going to use the plastic mulch cover from the start. - [19:36]: Covered each EarthBox with fresh plastic mulch covers (black side up). --- Then using a pair of scissors, I gently made an x-shape hole above each grow bag and secured each flap with a bit of sticky putty. --- Also placed the Ecowitt soil moisture sensors back into each EarthBox. The placement is: ----- Sensor01 - CH01 - EB1 [grow bag] ----- Sensor02 - CH02 - EB1 ----- Sensor03 - CH03 - EB2 [grow bag] ----- Sensor04 - CH04 - EB2 --- For the first few weeks, going to use humidity domes. - [20:03]: Misted each humidity dome with a bit of distilled water before covering each grow bag. --- Air vents closed. --- Also refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Okay! --- Time to set the light schedule! - [20:31]: Within the AC Infinity App, --- Adjusted the 'Vegetative [18/6]' Automation Schedule for the grow light. --- Set the START/END time to 4:00pm/10:00am --- Set this schedule to 'On Mode.' --- Set the MAX level to 1 - [20:38]: Took a PPFD reading. --- The top soil level was at 141 μmol/m2/s which gives a DLI of 9.14 mol/m2/d --- Great! --- Will keep it at this level for now. --- Once the first seed sprouts, may increase the PPFD to level 2. --- Plan to set a seedling PPFD goal closer to 200 μmol/m2/s or a DLI of 12.94 mol/m2/d - [20:45]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: --- 19% - [CH01 EB1 - grow bag] --- 26% - [CH02 EB1] --- 11% - [CH03 EB2 - grow bag] --- 28% - [CH04 EB2] --- Moisture levels look a bit dry around the grow bags but that's okay with me. --- Really don't want to over water these girls. --- Done! --- Hoping to see a pair of healthy sprouts in a few days! --- Grow strong little ones. That's an order! 🖖 Day 05 - Friday - 02/17/23 - Total Days: 004 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 72.2°F [22.3°C] - Humidity: 60.1% - VPD: 1.05 kPa - Soil %: [18, 26, 16, 27] ----------------------------------- - [09:25]: Quick morning check! --- Everything looking pretty good! --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). - [22:03]: Quick evening check! --- Temps and RH are okay, but could be a bit warmer. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Hoping for sprouts by the end of the week! Day 06 - Saturday - 02/18/23 - Total Days: 005 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 72.9°F [22.7°C] - Humidity: 59.2% - VPD: 1.10 kPa - Soil %: [18, 26, 16, 27] ----------------------------------- - [07:25]: Quick morning check! --- Tent environment looks good! --- Still no sprouts but it's only been about a day and a half. - [19:27]: Quick evening check up! --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Checked under the domes and both show no signs of sprouting. --- If no sprouts by tomorrow evening, plan to increase temps a bit higher. --- Hmm. --- Noticing a bit of brown dust building up on the surface of the mulch cover for EB1. --- It doesn't seem to be on EB2. Day 07 - Sunday - 02/19/23 - Total Days: 006 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 74.4°F [23.6°C] - Humidity: 58.2% - VPD: 1.18 kPa - Soil %: [18, 26, 17, 27] ----------------------------------- - [08:23]: Quick morning check up! --- Aye! Nice! --- She sprouted! --- Ahhh yea! --- The grow bag of EB1 now has a freshly sprouted seedling! --- Still no sprouting in EB2, but I can kind of see a bit of a bulge in the center of the grow bag. Hopefully she'll sprout by end of day. --- Misted the top of both grow bags with 5 mists of distilled water. - [18:58]: Evening check! --- Nice! --- Another sprout! --- Sort of. --- She just barely broke the surface. --- Her shell was still attached. Also a clump of peat moss was stuck to the shell. --- Using tweezers, I very carefully remove the shell. --- Unfortunately, the inner shell membrane was still stuck on her cotyledon leaves. --- Misted the top with 5 sprays of distilled water. --- Then gently removed the membrane with my fingers. --- Also misted the seedling of EB1. Her cotyledon leaves have fully uncurled by now and are looking great! Hopefully her first set of leaves grow in just as healthy. --- Also cleaned and re-misted both humidity domes (slightly cracked open the vents). --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). - [20:18]: Adjusted the tent's environmental controls. --- Adjusted the heater and humidifier's controller target TEMP/RH values from 75°F/60% to 78°F/60% --- Oops! Forgot to take measurements. - [22:58]: Took height readings. --- The seedling in EB1 was just under 1.5" tall. --- The seedling in EB2 was just under 1" tall. --- The light is currently about 48" away from the top of the seedlings (dimmed to 10%). --- Done! --- Wow! The seedling in EB2 is already uncurling her cotyledon leaves. --- Also the brown particles are just everywhere on EB1. But doesn't seem to be affecting the seedling in a negative way. --- Maybe soil mites? I dunno. --- As a form of integrated pest management, plan to spray a bit of Tweetmint next week. --- Soil mites aside, --- Overall a pretty good germination week! [END OF WEEK 00]

Great diary! Love the info. I too use earthboxes and Build a Soil nutrients. I noticed your Ecowitt moisture meter data is at 19-25%. My earthbox without the reservoir filled is reading 40-42%. If you use your fingers to test the area, are you finding the soil moist one inch below the surface? Just curious! Good luck with your grow, you are using the best of the best and I followed you to watch your progress!

@Ensign420, All great questions... I would wait until the moisture drops after top drench to fill the reservoir. I look to see if the reservoir is dry and if so, will fill reservoir a few days after last top drench. I use rainwater. I found that RO and distilled water contain absolutely nothing for plants. I noticed my plants really like rainwater. So, I set up a rain barrel to harvest water. Rainwater is near neutral PH with little or no particulates. I measured it as low as 5 ppm. Much better than the wasteful RO water. I do use distilled water for my humidifiers to reduce the white calcium/sodium dust that is caused by using tap water. Tap water is fine if you have decent water without too much sodium. I usually do not add additives to the reservoir, preferring a soil drench technique if adding anything. I have added Yah Whey to the reservoir with spectacular results, but much reduced dosage, say one ounce for entire reservoir, but very infrequently. I never PH my water. Microbes take care of all that for me, for which I am profoundly grateful. I would not use a wetting agent for the reservoir at all, just for top drench when you want to add additives such as BuildABloom which I highly recommend as a bloom booster, top drench that onto the soil. Nor would I add Mycrobe complete. I worry a lot about anaerobic bacteria in the reservoir as there is little aeration that occurs in the reservoir proper, so I try to keep it clean. Hope this helps. Great questions!

@MarcGrows, Nice! Out of all of my EarthBox grows, still have yet to fully fill the reservoir. But plan to give it a try soon. Just finished top watering today (reservoir is currently dry): - The larger plant is at 31% with the soil being at 44% - The smaller plant is at 33% with the soil being at 35% Since I just top watered today, guess I should wait a few days before filling the reservoirs right? Also wondering, when you're filling the reservoir all the way with 2-3gal, do you use tap water or distilled water? Do you add any additives to the reservoir water (Yah-Whey, Quillaja, Mycrobe Complete, etc)? Do you pH the water?

@Ensign420, my results with the earthbox have been spectacular in the past, and I really do nothing, that's why I love using them. I top drench for the first 4-5 weeks until roots have developed long enough to drink the water in the reservoir. When I do fill the reservoir, I fill it completely until water escapes from the overflow. Usually, 2-3 gallons. I then watch the water level until it is dry from viewing the fill tube. I usually wait one or two days before refilling the empty reservoir again. After initially filling the reservoir, I then top water only for a feeding such as BuildABloom or ferments. I wait to soil drench when the reservoir is empty. I do not have to feed her a lot as I top dress shortly after she drinks the entire reservoir for pre-flower feeding. I usually cut out ferments in flower. Currently, my Ecowitt moisture is at 53% with water in the reservoir. I have not customized the MULT_CH Soil settings. No need to apologize! We use the earthbox for simplicity in our busy lives. I also re-amended my soil before the grow. One of the ingredients I have never used before to re-amend is basalt. Known for its mineralization and paramagnetic energy, it could be why my moisture meter states a higher percentage. It sure conditioned my media making it fluffy, providing a texture I never experienced before.

Excellent detail. I just bought the Apogee MQ-610 ePar that measures up to 730nm. I should've spent the money on that a long time ago. My lights were too close last season.
