Introduction - Week 05 Summary - Ensign's log, stardate 100830.07, This week was better than last and growth is less droopy. At the beginning of the week, foliar fed and started bottom watering. Mid week, top dressed and top watered both EarthBoxes. Also got a mini greenhouse and started to dial in the local RH closer to 75% which as helped. By the end of the week, bottom watered again and now both are growing along again! Decided to leave the DLI unchanged (currently around 31). Still have to get the hang of watering. Especially during the early stages of growth. But now both are looking happier and vegging along. In a few days, plan to increase soil moisture levels a bit more. Onto next week! Engage! 🖖 [START OF WEEK 05] ========================================================== WEEK 05 - Pre-Veg → Full Veg 03/20/23 → 03/26/23 This Week's Estimated Goals ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DLI: 20 mol/m2/d PPFD: 301 μmol/m2/s VPD: 0.5-1.0 kPa This Week's Meter Readings & Averages ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DLI: 20.80 mol/m2/d PPFD: 321 μmol/m2/s VPD: 0.96 kPa Soil %: [16.6, 27.4, 20.7, 28.4] ========================================================== Day 01 - Monday - 03/20/23 - Total Days: 035 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 76.2°F [24.6°C] - Humidity: 72.2% - VPD: 0.84 kPa - Soil %: [16, 24, 19, 24] ----------------------------------- - [09:25]: Morning my ladies! --- Hmm. EB2 is slightly more saturate. --- This week, roughly 6 cups of water have been fed to each EarthBox. --- I really hope I didn't frack this up. Again. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Done! Day 05 - Friday - 03/24/23 - Total Days: 039 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 74.9°F [23.8°C] - Humidity: 70.9% - VPD: 0.84 kPa - Soil %: [17, 30, 21, 32] ----------------------------------- - [09:30]: Quick morning checkup and refill! --- Still looking green! --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). - [22:33]: Evening checkup! --- Growth is not yellowing so hoping for the best. --- Aye nice! Got a package! --- A few days ago, purchased a mini greenhouse (via Amazon). - [22:39]: Time to build it! --- First, I removed both humidity domes. - [22:48]: Using the aluminum bars and plastic fittings, I built up the basic frame. --- Then after a bit of tinkering, I slid the plastic cover over the frame and secured it. --- Lastly, zipped the mini greenhouse up. --- Done! --- Over the next few days, will check local RH and adjust the conditions as needed. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). Day 06 - Saturday - 03/25/23 - Total Days: 040 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77.0°F [25.0°C] - Humidity: 65.3% - VPD: 1.09 kPa - Soil %: [17, 30, 19, 31] ----------------------------------- - [07:32]: Quick morning check up! --- Growth is still a bit droopy. But nothing is yellowing. --- Local RH is a bit low. --- Misted the inside of mini greenhouse with 7-8 sprays of distilled water. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). - [20:12]: Evening check! --- Growth is looking about the same. --- Hmm. --- At 55%, local RH is still way too low. --- This should be closer to 75% so need to add more air moisture. - [20:21]: Repositioned the mini greenhouse. --- Now the greenhouse is only covering the plant in EB1. Hopefully with a better seal, the RH will go up. --- Since the plant in EB2 is still small enough, I simply placed the humidity dome back on. - [20:25]: Misted both the greenhouse and dome with distilled water (10-15 sprays for the greenhouse, a few mists for the dome). --- Also sprayed the top of the mulch cover for EB1 (about 10 sprays). --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). - [20:45]: Decided to adjust the humidifiers output. --- Now the humidifier is pushing vapor back towards the oscillating fan again. --- Will check RH in the morning and will continue to re-mist as needed. Day 07 - Sunday - 03/26/23 - Total Days: 041 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 78.1°F [25.6°C] - Humidity: 60.1% - VPD: 1.28 kPa - Soil %: [15, 30, 19, 31] ----------------------------------- - [07:32]: Quick morning checkup and refill! --- Growth is looking a lot better! --- EB1 is looking less droopy! The increase RH seems to be helping. --- Misted both the greenhouse and dome with distilled water. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Been checking soil moisture and have noticed drying up around both grow bags. --- Depending on the moisture levels, plan to bottom water again tonight. - [21:12]: Good evening my gals! --- Evening checkup! --- Before bottom watering, going to check the soil moisture. - [21:18]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: --- 15% - [CH01 EB1 - grow bag] --- 30% - [CH02 EB1] --- 18% - [CH03 EB2 - grow bag] --- 30% - [CH04 EB2] --- Soil moisture is already pretty dry around the grow bags. --- Now for the basic meter. - [21:26]: Using the soil moisture probe, took readings for each EarthBox. --- Soil moisture levels for EB1 was at 6.5 out of 10 --- Top soil looked hydrated with a bit of mycelial growth present. --- Soil moisture levels for EB2 was at 10 out of 10 --- Top soil looked really hydrated with a bit more mycelial growth than EB1. --- With the current soil moisture levels, decided to do a bottom watering for both (more for EB1) - [21:39]: Took PPFD readings. --- EB1 was around 321 μmol/m2/s which gives a DLI of 20.80 mol/m2/d --- EB2 was around 317 μmol/m2/s which gives a DLI of 20.54 mol/m2/d --- Going to leave the PPFD levels alone. - [21:55]: Took end of week height readings. --- EB1 is now a bit taller. --- EB1 is about 5.75" tall. --- EB2 is still about 4.75" tall. --- EB1 was about 21" away from the grow light. --- EB2 was about 22.75" away from the grow light. --- Okay! Time to bottom water! - [22:12]: Filled a pitcher with 6 cups of distilled water. --- Then filled a measuring cup to the 2 cup line with distilled water. --- Added 1/16tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract --- Added 1/8tsp of: ------ Horticultural Aloe ------ Big 6 Micronutrients [+ Humic Acid] --- Added 1/4tsp of: ------ Mycrobe Complete ------ Recharge --- Added 1/2tsp of: ------ Pure Protein Dry [Organic Fish Aminos] --- Added 2.5mL of Bio-Catalyst Enzyme Elixer --- Added 6mL of Yah-Whey --- Mixed the solution and poured everything straight into the pitcher to mix with the 6 cups of distilled water from earlier (now 8 cups total). - [22:46]: Mixed the solution again and poured 4 cups into each EarthBox's fill tube. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Placed the mini greenhouse and humidity dome back. - [23:02]: Misted both with distilled water. --- About 20 sprays for the greenhouse and 3 for the dome. --- Done! --- Did not top water anything. --- Really hope I didn't over-water. Great diary! Love the info. I too use earthboxes and Build a Soil nutrients. I noticed your Ecowitt moisture meter data is at 19-25%. My earthbox without the reservoir filled is reading 40-42%. If you use your fingers to test the area, are you finding the soil moist one inch below the surface? Just curious! Good luck with your grow, you are using the best of the best and I followed you to watch your progress!

@Ensign420, All great questions... I would wait until the moisture drops after top drench to fill the reservoir. I look to see if the reservoir is dry and if so, will fill reservoir a few days after last top drench. I use rainwater. I found that RO and distilled water contain absolutely nothing for plants. I noticed my plants really like rainwater. So, I set up a rain barrel to harvest water. Rainwater is near neutral PH with little or no particulates. I measured it as low as 5 ppm. Much better than the wasteful RO water. I do use distilled water for my humidifiers to reduce the white calcium/sodium dust that is caused by using tap water. Tap water is fine if you have decent water without too much sodium. I usually do not add additives to the reservoir, preferring a soil drench technique if adding anything. I have added Yah Whey to the reservoir with spectacular results, but much reduced dosage, say one ounce for entire reservoir, but very infrequently. I never PH my water. Microbes take care of all that for me, for which I am profoundly grateful. I would not use a wetting agent for the reservoir at all, just for top drench when you want to add additives such as BuildABloom which I highly recommend as a bloom booster, top drench that onto the soil. Nor would I add Mycrobe complete. I worry a lot about anaerobic bacteria in the reservoir as there is little aeration that occurs in the reservoir proper, so I try to keep it clean. Hope this helps. Great questions!

@MarcGrows, Nice! Out of all of my EarthBox grows, still have yet to fully fill the reservoir. But plan to give it a try soon. Just finished top watering today (reservoir is currently dry): - The larger plant is at 31% with the soil being at 44% - The smaller plant is at 33% with the soil being at 35% Since I just top watered today, guess I should wait a few days before filling the reservoirs right? Also wondering, when you're filling the reservoir all the way with 2-3gal, do you use tap water or distilled water? Do you add any additives to the reservoir water (Yah-Whey, Quillaja, Mycrobe Complete, etc)? Do you pH the water?

@Ensign420, my results with the earthbox have been spectacular in the past, and I really do nothing, that's why I love using them. I top drench for the first 4-5 weeks until roots have developed long enough to drink the water in the reservoir. When I do fill the reservoir, I fill it completely until water escapes from the overflow. Usually, 2-3 gallons. I then watch the water level until it is dry from viewing the fill tube. I usually wait one or two days before refilling the empty reservoir again. After initially filling the reservoir, I then top water only for a feeding such as BuildABloom or ferments. I wait to soil drench when the reservoir is empty. I do not have to feed her a lot as I top dress shortly after she drinks the entire reservoir for pre-flower feeding. I usually cut out ferments in flower. Currently, my Ecowitt moisture is at 53% with water in the reservoir. I have not customized the MULT_CH Soil settings. No need to apologize! We use the earthbox for simplicity in our busy lives. I also re-amended my soil before the grow. One of the ingredients I have never used before to re-amend is basalt. Known for its mineralization and paramagnetic energy, it could be why my moisture meter states a higher percentage. It sure conditioned my media making it fluffy, providing a texture I never experienced before.

Excellent detail. I just bought the Apogee MQ-610 ePar that measures up to 730nm. I should've spent the money on that a long time ago. My lights were too close last season.
