Just finished the first full week of 12/12 light and these girls are exploding with growth! Brewed up an Aerated Compost Tea over the last 36 hours which finished up right as the light turned on today so all the plants got a good dose of this right as they woke up. The ACT was 5 gallons of water, 2 cups of KIS (Keep It Simple Organics) Fungal Compost, 1/2 cup of Blackstrap Molasses, 2.5 tsp of Fish Hydrolysate, 3.5 Tbsp of Kelp Meal, and a heavy pinch of Build A Soil Craft blend. Had a nice earthy smell to it and a big head of foam on it when finished.
This recipe and method was obtained from microbeorganics.com courtesy of Mr. Tim Wilson. His research and writing are some of the most informative stuff out there regarding soil microbes and compost teas/microbe multipliers and I HIGHLY recommend checking it out if you have any interest in compost teas and/or really anything regarding plants and how they grow. I built the 5 gallon mini-microbulator brewer design he has on his site and it works wonders! Only things I would recommend doing differently is getting the one size larger aquarium air pump. Tim recommends the Elemental 951 GPH aquarium pump but I would absolutely recommend getting the one size larger pump which is the Elemental 1157 GPH pump. The 1157 has a 3/8" hose barb that comes with it so you don't have to try and stretch the 3/8" hose over the nozzle and clamp it on there which Tim suggest doing with the 951 which comes with a 1/4" hose barb. I had tried this as suggested by Tim and could not for the life of me get the hose even clamped as tight as possible to stop vibrating off of the nozzle. It appears the actual hose barb with a clamp is necessary so that is why I highly recommend going with the larger pump (the Elemental 1157 GPH) and the extra power definitely helps as well (really hard to have too much agitation, better to have a little more than too little). I also suggest using a beer brewing 5 gallon bucket which is taller than a standard 5 gallon bucket. This helps greatly reduce all of the splashing when combined with a standard 5 gallon bucket used like a lid. After getting the brewer going I put the regular 5 gallon bucket upside down on top and bungee it to the bottom bucket (being careful not to pinch the air hose) which works really good and have had no splashing outside the bucket (put this contraption in an old plastic bin to really minimize any splashes or water/tea getting anywhere. Forgot to snap a few pictures of the process and contraption but will next time. Feel free to ask if you have any questions or need help doing this!!
BK #2 is absolutely massive and towers above the rest, really wish I took clones of this girl now as she seems like a real winner so far. She was getting really close within a foot of the light so had to super crop the tallest branches/tops pretty heavily to get the canopy even and at least a foot away from the light. After doing that a few days ago they are recovering nicely and starting to orient themselves upwards again. This girl is drinking at least 2 gallons of water every day now! Buds are coming in more and more and starting to slowly thicken up and stack. Still super early but nice to see them coming in like they are already. She measures in at 54" even after being super cropped! Already has a bubba/fruity odor that is pretty loud even if just touching the leaves/ branches. Really comes out when defoliating and cutting some of the leaves and branches.
BK #1 is a lot smaller due to being transplanted to the 30 gallon a lot later. Still looking really healthy and starting to bush out a little more. Measures 36" tall and the tallest branch/part was super cropped so would be taller if not for this.
WW #3 is slightly taller than the WW #1 it shares a 30 gallon with. Both are really healthy looking while being nice and bushy. Buds are starting to form but not as far along as the big BK #2. Super cropped the tallest branches on both of these although not as rough as the BK got since they aren't nearly as tall. Starting to recover after doing that a few days ago. WW #1 is measuring in at 45.5" tall and WW #3 is 43" so very close in height which is nice since the canopy is pretty even and they are sharing that 30 gallon container.
Going to start updating the Covert Genetics Big Body Gelati that is going in the remaining 30 gallon container. That one is 33" tall and looking really healthy with some good growth each week. Did a bending of the top tallest branch although idk if I'd consider it a true super crop. It wasn't bent nearly as much but should be alright. Keep bending it down each day or two but don't wanna stress it too much or risk breaking it. Seems to be working though as the side branches/shoots are starting to grow more and more. The main stalk/stem on this one is thicker than the others besides the huge Bubba Kush #2.
The BK #2 and the WW's need water every day while the others need it every few days. That will probably change as they mature more and catch up to the BK #2 and WW's
Thanks for following along!!
@BudBoutique, Same! Wasn't able to train them as much as I'd like due to being unexpectedly out of town quite a bit during this run so curious how theyll turn out as they are almost too tall at this point lol.
You clearly know what you're doing, but I've never seen black or grey mycelium. You sure that mass of "good mycelium" isn't dead, a fruiting body, or a mold? Myc doesn't really lift above the substrate until its trying to fruit, and we wouldn't call the fruiting body myc.
Any chance at ID?
Also, damn, we really are in sync. I grew NLA last, WW now. Happily Minnesota organic grow!
@JazzBerries, I haven't seen it like that either and it didn't even occur that it could have been something besides mycelium and possibly be a mold but you could be right. I was out of town for a week right after this last update and that little ball in the photo has disappeared and there is no sign of it anymore. Plants are thriving still and no signs of mold or anything bad spreading so that is relieving. It definitely was more in the mulch layer versus being in the soil when it was visible though. Going to keep monitoring but it has disappeared at least for now. If it returns or I start seeing the plant getting "sick" I will update more.
Wow that is quite the coincidence lol! Thanks for the comment, and pointing out the mycelium/mold in the photo. Also happy growing to you as well! Will definitely follow along and wish you nothing but positive results to a fellow MN grower!
@Herbie101, Thanks man!! I really enjoy the cover crop too. Not only does it provide a nice visual aesthetic, it helps out in a number of other areas as well. Thanks again for following along!
@CannabisFarmerGuyDude, I love the idea and philosophy begind the living soil thing! I just need to learn my basics first, but its perfect to follow people along who work with it to learn. π I hope all will go well! Best of luck buddy!π±π
@Herbie101, Thanks man!! Appreciate the love and you following along! First time going full "Living Soil" and using Build A Soil products so really excited to see how things turn out and share with you all.
