The days are getting noticeably shorter and the nights colder. There are still sunny, hot days underneath, with rain from time to time. In addition, there was a very gusty wind on two days. However, Passion #1 has coped very well and has continued to grow. The lady on the terrace has flowered a little further than the lady in the polytunnel and has also grown more vigorously. Both plants have been defoliated a little, which makes them look like large autoflowers. There are no pests or diseases on the plants, just a little fly damage on the lady in the foil tunnel as it is not washed by the rain. Passion #1 in pot 150 cm Passion #1 in polytunnel 143 cm

Is it necessary to defoliate plants growing outdoors in pots or in the garden soil? What I read about this is very contradictory.

There is no straight answer. It depends on the plant and your environment. Like asking if anti freeze is important in a car. If you are somewhere it gets below freezing, probably yes. If not, probably no. It all depends on the humidity and airflow. Plants are only at the pinnacle of evolution for the environment they evolved in. If you remove them from that climate and grow them elswhere, they may do terribly as they are not suited for that climate or environment. Like a polar bear trying to survive in the Sahara, pinnacle predator in the cold, but dead fast in the heat. We are now growing mostly polyhybrids bred for stable indoor climates and sometimes they need some help outside. You need to work out what is best for your environment.

As the temperatures drop, you’ve got the perfect setup to help your plants transition quickly into the flowering phase after those high temps. Fingers crossed that everything plays out well! 🌡️🌸
