2024.07.14 The week was very changeable with heavy rain, sun and lots of wind. Passion #1 coped well and continued to grow. To avoid having to constantly work with liquid fertiliser, I applied a layer of manure consisting of worm compost, compost, malted barley, horn meal and pelleted cattle manure. The malted barley is supposed to bring enzymes and minerals into the soil, which will also be important for later flowering. Thanks for the tip to @Northern_Ent. The top layer is approx. 3-4 cm thick. The plants are now forming long side branches. As Passion #1 grows very quickly in the polytunnel, the question arises as to what height I should top it, I have a maximum height of 220 cm available in the polytunnel. Sizes Passion #1 in pot 50 cm Passion #1 in polytunnel 66 cm

Is it necessary to defoliate plants growing outdoors in pots or in the garden soil? What I read about this is very contradictory.

There is no straight answer. It depends on the plant and your environment. Like asking if anti freeze is important in a car. If you are somewhere it gets below freezing, probably yes. If not, probably no. It all depends on the humidity and airflow. Plants are only at the pinnacle of evolution for the environment they evolved in. If you remove them from that climate and grow them elswhere, they may do terribly as they are not suited for that climate or environment. Like a polar bear trying to survive in the Sahara, pinnacle predator in the cold, but dead fast in the heat. We are now growing mostly polyhybrids bred for stable indoor climates and sometimes they need some help outside. You need to work out what is best for your environment.

As the temperatures drop, you’ve got the perfect setup to help your plants transition quickly into the flowering phase after those high temps. Fingers crossed that everything plays out well! 🌡️🌸
