Grow Questions

BillMonroestarted grow question 6 years ago
Indoor growers, what's your favorite node to top? 😊 Do you prefer topping above the 2nd node for 4 big colas ("uncle ben method"), or the 3rd, 4th, ..., for a bushier plant? . Please share your opinion if you have tried some methods 👍

Nice question BillMonroe! The first thing I look at is the photoperiod of the plant. With Normal Photoperiod plants how much time you spend waiting for a recovery is your only enemy and you can always rely on controlling the light cycle to extend the veg time. With this in mind I personally top early between the 2nd/3rd node with 5 finger leaves so I can train the plant down short as early as possible. Its all about preference and how much time you are willing to spend for recovery. If you don't have much time, waiting till the 4th/5th node can lead to a faster recovery. With Autoflowers I only top healthy plants by cutting the third node with 5 finger leaves off leaving two 5 finger leaf nodes (see week 4 day 23 my Green Crack Auto). Most people don't top Autos, however I find it to be successful on a healthy plant. Your plant is looking healthy and clean friend! Best of luck! 😎

@Gordy, this strain has a silver appearance for sure, partly because the HID is growing it to potential, and partly because the HID shows it off best. HID rules. I’m an LED man because I’m terrified of both the electric bill and risk of fire, so I’ll accept the slightly diminished product LED yields. Kudos @BillMonroe. Enjoy your harvest

@BillMonroe, Fascinating info! Thanks for the education. Encouraging news about LED development. I added UVB reptile bulbs but who knows if it works for sure. Seemed to increase trichome concentration I also grow outdoors in a hoop house, where they get sun and fresh air but are protected from rain and damaging winds. Hand sized spiders build webs near the tops, assuring smaller pests are kept to a minimum. The indoor weed is gorgeous. The outdoor crop is clearly not. But the yield is huge and more importantly, the high is sublime! I love my outdoor weed much more than ‘lab grown’! You simply cannot beat the actual sun Great work in your garden!

@Gordy, Yes they are beautiful =) I have clones of these plants and I'm waiting to select one for the next grow. I've only grown with seeds before and these 4 plants are clearly rather different, one of them looks like it will be done much sooner so I'm keeping my eye on that one. The ones with thinner leaves are sure developing more slowly. So hopefully I'll be able to grow a single phenotype of it next time. I'll definitely be showing the COB grow here and comparing my experience with cmh 😊 I think now it's better to go with the samsung strips or COB leds than a single CMH because I see the advantage of having more light sources. (While 315 covers a 3x3 fine, the ppfd is quite low at the edges) The heat output of cmh and led I estimate to be quite similar, except that the leds won't increase the leaf temperature so much I use the purple led for veg and I've never seen a good PPFD output on youtube from those epistar leds. Well not good enough to flower optimally anyway. And the thought that plants dont use green light is totally false if you do research for example. It's a bit antiquated. Sure plants do well with those lights but they are kinda misleading. Especially when 120 watt quantum boards can get 2 gram per watt easily from many people. (A single CMH 315 is not really optimal for flowering too PPFD wise. but I can't use 630w of them). That's just my thoughts for single lights, I think ifyou can hang multiple CMHs and have the lights overlap they might be preferable to leds depending on environment. But really the leds are best at delivering high PPFD evenly across the canopy. 👍 If you ever want some recommendations for cheap led just chat me via the menu in the bottom right

@BillMonroe, Thanks! SSH is such a good looking strain. I look forward to watching your grows in the future, hopefully you post updates using the different lights. Are you going to continue to grow SSH or do you grow a variety of strains? I would like to try a CMH, but I'm worried about heat. I live in an apartment with utilities included, so I don't want to push my luck using their electricity. I'm not sure how they would feel about me powering all of these lights & air conditioners on their dime, maybe I should ask, heh... After a few more grows I'll do my research on a new light and we'll see how the SSH will grow with it. Hopefully we can get some better results. Good luck, she's looking good.

You have the patience of a saint! I’d like to see a magnified photo of the tops just for my own reference. Not sure if you use a jewelers loop or not.

@ThatoneAKguy, thanks! 😊 I thought I had replied but it seems I didn't. For the harvest I'll take some trichome pictures with the loupe!

I followe this one have got some zambeza s Seeds coming and a top strain like super silver haze interesting
BillMonroe
BillMonroecommented6 years ago
@@@Tryhard_grower, Nice! Which strains have you picked? So far I have been really satisfied with the homogeneity of the Critical plants. All of them have been pretty much the same with stable genetics. Granted, the sample size is only 3. With my first seeds from a different seedbank it was like I was growing 4 completely different strains.

Amazing that at week 10 still have quite a few white pistils. Amazing looking colas. This might be a 13 weeker

You are killing it my friend!! I’ve got a diary of a soil SSH and I knew they could be so much more. Mine is my first grow and in soil. I didn’t let mine veg long enough but I’m also limited on head room to 6’10”. Week 9 flower and still cranking out mad white pistils!

@BillMonroe, I was real lucky to figured this one out before I did something drastic like assume it was a potassium deficiency. I added bloom khaos from the nectar for the gods lineup and wanted to start easy into it. I did some googling and found a blog from ilgm’s site citing what I did as rule number 2 of never to do with that lineup.

BillMonroecommented6 years ago
@ThatoneAKguy, Ahh, in those new pictures I see what you mean 😊! Those pictures are quite clear. I still don't think it's heat burn, because the necrosis / chlorosis is almost too clean. In heat or light damaged plants I would expect to see a damaged area with (more complete) yellowing of the leaves, and more leaves being affected by the hotspot. So in my opinion the rest of the damaged leaf is too healthy and green, in addition to there seemingly not being any other hotspot damage. https://growdiaries.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/static/post/photo/7325/704810_pineapple-chunk-critical-xxl.jpg That's what burn from the heat intensity looked like for me. Notice the yellowing of leaves in the hotspot, but not on tops outside of the area. They really look kind of fried. The slight yellowing of the leaf would happen before the other more extreme looking damage. Well, I can give my opinion about what I think it's not, I am pretty confident about that. But I can't really say what it is in this case! I can predict that people are going to point out phosphorus deficiency, magnesium deficiency, PH issues, etc. Yet, you are clearly on top of your PH and the fertilizer is probably also not a huge issue because almost everthing in your room is looking extremely healthy! Your environment stats are on point too and you have a lot of moving air. Perhaps it was indeed caused by leaves touching causing an undesirable micro-climate. The leaves that get hit almost 24/7 directly by my fans often show these kind of blotches too. My first grow I was really obsessed over the leaf symptoms, but with experience I learned it doesn't matter that they get a bit messed up. All the actions I made to "fix" problems that weren't problems (or misdiagnosed by myself) probably made things worse, haha :). When I see your video here's my thought: if this was my room right now, despite maybe a small issue, >95% of my plants is absolutely healthy. I would change nothing at all and be happy, ride out the next weeks and the plants will grow themselves and show their beauty. 😀 Of course, keeping an eye on the problem if it gets worse on multiple places in your plants/canopy.

@BillMonroe,can you go look at my latest week and see the browning leaf photos? It seems where leaves touch each other they are browning or burnt.

@TheBudWhisperer, Same thoughts here man 😀 Let's see it fill out next week
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommented6 years ago
@BillMonroe, yeah but ur still in veg. So realistically ur just gonna have a stronger (albeit shorter) plant for flower. That’s never a bad thing😉👍
BillMonroe
BillMonroecommented6 years ago
@TheBudWhisperer, Haha 😀 I think the same when I open the tent. I hope they recover well. If they don't, I have a lot of clones. If I topped them earlier it would be great. Now the energy distribution between the branches was uneven. I let them get way too tall hehe😊

BillMonroecommented6 years ago
@ThatoneAKguy, Thanks my man! I cut my room a little over a week ago and the bud is almost ready for jarring. I was following your diary too and I think you did an amazing job for the first grow! My first time was almost exactly a year ago and in hindsight it was kind of a disaster. My tent was full, but only 2 plants were of good quality. I have a feeling that won't be a problem for you. Quality over quantity for sure 😉
Astroboy
Astroboycommentedweek 176 years ago
Wow what do u feed that ahah
BillMonroe
BillMonroecommented6 years ago
@AstroBoy, Hey =) the fertilizer I use are listed; I'm feeding the cheapest liquid mineral I could find, along with a liquid silica product and the "green sensation" booster. Aiming for about a 500-600ppm dosage on top of 200ppm tap water of high quality with feeds, depending on what the plants are showing and some other things. In my NPK the N is 50% urea which releases relatively quickly but is not available immediately unlike NO3 and NH4. I add a little (liquid) calcium nitrate for extra nitrogen and ca which is readily available Basically 3-1-2 all throughout with some extra P from the top booster and High calcium. But the nutrients are really the last thing on my mind.
