In the back row of the photo (left to right) are the 2 Critical Purple "auto" i started this journal with. They are 80+ days old and still in veg, the front row is also Critical Purple (and 1 GWS auto). They were all planted at the same time

Grow Questions

This is my very first autoflower grow so i'm not entirely sure what to expect.... My question is whether or not autos do a flowering stretch like photoperiods or does growth begin to slow at pre-flower?

They do everything a photoperiod does, but faster. How? Think of it like this: a photo strain that does 4 week of veg (18 hours light schedule) and 8 week of flower (12 hours if light schedule) will have a total of 4*7*18 + 8*7*12 = 504 + 672 = 1.176 hours of light to power it's whole growth and bloom. Now an auto strain doing 20/4 light schedule will get, during a 8 week grow cycle: 8*7*20 = 1.120 hours of light. Roughly the same amount of light to power its growth, but 4 weeks faster. Usually the seedling / veg stage of autos lasts 3 weeks, then you get 2 weeks of stretch and 3 to 4 weeks of bloom stage. Depending on how much light the are getting they can take a few more weeks.

The drooping is all me, i should have watered sooner because we've had some extremely hot days this week but this yellowing has me concerned...Does this look like PH, nutrient issue, or just how auto's react under watering? I'm flushing atm, any suggestions?

If you've just gave the plant a good watering then I wouldn't be too worried but lesson learned and you'll be ready next time around. Its very noticeable that your plants under went heat stress simply be seeing the curl on your leaves. If its announcing to be a hot day make sure to water in the morning and then simply make sure your soil is moist throughout the night and repeat as necessary.

Thanks a million for the reply :) so they do experience a small flowering stretch? I'm sorry i should have been more specific. I've grow outdoor photoperiod plants most my life and Iv'e always noted a slowing of growth near the end of veg that lasts thru until pre-flower and then (almost over night) they will go thru a significant stretch. I was wondering if i should expect the same behavior from an auto?
Athos
Athoscommented5 years ago
@Kitties_and_Colas, yes you can expect the same behavior. Although the slowing of growth during veg is usually due the lack of space in the pot, if you were to up pot at that point there would be no slowing in growth.

You’re killing it with the memes and the plants! I’m jelly you’re able to grow outdoors 🙃

@Kitties_and_Colas, ahh quite controlling I see. Haha I’m kidding. That definitely makes sense though. Cloning is another practice I’d love to try. My tent is small as well (3’x2’) I’m running two autos in it and both have completely filled my tent wall to wall. I’ll be only running one at a time from now on. I’m giving you a follow cause you’re cool and you grow some awesome stuff!

@Rad2thebone, the big one is that i can't pull the trigger on when the plant starts to flower..if i have an unhappy or sick photoperiod plant, i can veg it out and decide when to flower and decide on size of yield..another thing is we smoke a bunch so we like to grow perpetually, we keep a few mom's around and clone them often...I don't mind autos outdoors (and they seem to do the best for us there) but having them indoors tends to mess up our routine, that and our veg tent is only a 2x4 (4x4 for flower) so it becomes a space issue as well... we have a bunch of autoflower diaries, 90% are plants bought as feminized but turned out to be autos.. this diary is the only time we deliberately purchased autos (and of course they weren't autos lol)

@Kitties_and_Colas, Dang that’s sucky, hopefully ilgm is better for you. As far as autos go, is it the yield or the quality that you don’t like? I’m on my first grow right now and it’s an auto but I have a photo g13 haze that I’ll play around with next just to try something else out. Hopefully this auto turns out nice though.

This strain is great if you're trying to demotivate, or sleep. That said, I fucking love it. Not mucha head high sadly

Nice haul especially for autos I'm on my second round of autos I never thought I'd like growing them, I still prefer photos but autos are kinda fun

Was this smart pots in a hole in the ground or what's the medium here? I'm intrigued.

@Kitties_and_Colas, I've got 2 autos that were no way autos as well, but now that I like photo better its all good. Cheers to NE. I lived in Presque Isle briefly.

@YBorSchmeebor, yeah...we're in the far NE United States (10min from Canada) and the wind is awful late in the season...we drop them in holes sometimes to stabilize them...these outgrew their containers in veg, they were sold as autoflowers but were definitely photoperiod

@Catsin_Superposition Hi mate I popped a solution in for your grow question 👍

Wow, I don't know what to say about this one. I get a 6 week veg and 12 week flower. Opposite of what you got. If these would have been grow till the very end. This would have been at least a 6 month plant 😮 I want to get a few seeds into a friends hands so he can try them out doors. This is one strain that always does great for me. I did do a pair recently. But experimented with the whole auto line up. My results were not good. I am back to my normal ways now. I am working my way through your journals now

@Kitties_and_Colas, That sucks to hear. I know there support sucks. They give the same line over and over. I would ditch these guys if they were not the only place for me to get these seeds.
Kitties_and_Colas
Kitties_and_Colascommented3 years ago
@justright these were labeled "autoflower" but every seed in that pack was photoperiod.. I've seen diaries of this strain and week 5-7 seems to be the average time for buds to start but these grew on the same timeline as the other photoperiods we had in the field.. I wrote Grower's Choice about this but they just gave a generic ruderalis speech... we've had lots of seeds since from them marked "photoperiod" that were autoflowers.. it was getting expensive dealing with Grower's Choice, our last seed pack (and an angry friend's) of GDP fem only had 1 photoperiod the rest auto and unusablefor our purposes... that was the final straw..after 3 years of hit/miss, i just don't trust their seeds anymore 😕

At 10 weeks your Critical Purple should have started flowering. Mine started showing those cotton balls at 5 or 6 weeks. Mine look nothing like yours. Is it possible you mixed them up? Otherwise I'd contact Growers choice and show them some pics. Maybe they screwed up?

@Kitties_and_Colas, sorry you had that experience. We are having pretty good luck except for mites getting to them. All 5 seeds popped and are flowering like mad. 21 days till harvest. My husband chose auto flower by accident but I was so impressed I bought a few more varieties.
