11/22 - 11/28 Early in the week, I was concerned about stunted growth as my seedlings remained in the cotyledon phase for a period of about 4 days. I had two hypotheses for the lack of growth in my seedlings: Hypothesis #1: Inconsistent environmental conditions Temperature and humidity fluctuated during the first week of germination. Humidity ranged from 27% to 94% but stayed within a general band of 50-80%. Temperature was a bit more consistent with min and max temps at 66 and 84 degrees but stayed in a general band of 70 to 82. I had trouble moderating the temperature and humidity within my grow tent while the ventilation fan was running. I opted to suspend use of the ventilation fan, introduce an oscillating fan, move the lights up and opening the intake vents. Once I took these actions, the temperature and humidity managed to remain consistent for both my bonsais and my regular grow. Hypothesis #2: Seedlings weren't getting enough nutrients The approach I've been following most closely is Mr. Grow It. I'm using Fox Farm Ocean Forest and my understanding is that this soil has enough nutrients to feed my plan until day 20-30, so perhaps this wasn't the culprit for slow growth. My next thought is that it must be either a water issue or a nutrient update issue. To mitigate that issue without potentially overwhelming my seedlings with nutrients, I decided to introduce Great White's mycorrhizae (1/2 tsp for a gallon of water) during watering on 11/24. I split this gallon of water between 2 seedlings in 5g pots and 3 seedlings in bonsai pots and ended up with about a 1/2 qt in residual water which I continued to use in a spray bottle to keep the top soil moist over the next two days. Within two days of watering and normalizing the environmental conditions, my seedlings really started to take off. It seemed that the number of leaves appeared to double overnight.

Seeing yellowing/browning on the fan leaves for my bonsais. Is this a calcium deficiency?

Hi mate, the first thing that come to mind when i saw your leaves is overwater. This droopiness to me is a sign that the plant in not getting oxygen. From the large fan leaf on the pic see that there is also a ph imbalance. So my course of action would be, first to let the soil dry out, and see if the leaves go back to their normal position (like praying) all up. Then I would flush the medium with a phed water. If all go well those leaves that were affected wont recover but the plant will

I love the bonsai pot idea! I’ll be checking in on this, I got the same ILGM zkittlez auto seeds in an comparison between a 5 gallon pot and 1 qt pot going right now.. good luck. PS I’ve never used FF ocean forest but my understanding is it is quite “hot” or full of a lot of fertilizers so that could have been the issue in the beginning. My understanding is that the seedling has all it needs nutrient wise stored within itself for the first 7-10 days at least.

@SmokeableHobby, yeah that green wire is def my favorite way to train for sure. Experimenting with different training techniques is fun too.. just different ideas and ways to get light to the lower canopy and manipulate the natural structure/growth of the plant in general. Let me know if you need any ideas

@Ezzjaybruh, I do the exact same thing...just sit in front of my tent and stare mindlessly at my plants. Meditating on their progress. I took your advice and ordered some of the green training wire - great stuff! Started experimenting with LST. Will post my progress in the next week.

@SmokeableHobby, hahaha good point.. I was the same way on my first grow, peeking under my DWC at the roots every hour and sometimes just still just sit in front of the tent doing nothing but staring at them. As far as LST products, the main thing is being able to secure whatever you are using to the pot, and that may be hard with those bonsai pots.. I just use the green plastic coated wires, they are real nice. Then there are these cool yo yo type devices I got on Amazon that you can attach to the poles on your tent and they have like fishing wire you connect to your plant..

@Lazuli, I also had a CREE COB LED (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08B8T8C72) in the tent that put off another 100w. I was using this light exclusively for my bonsais but then my 5 gallons grew way bigger than I thought they would and ended up using the CREE for supplemental light once I was a week or two into flower.

Looking good! I’ve personally started to wait until the bottom of the plant has a bit more rigidity such that it can remain somewhat upright while the top nodes are bent over - before I start training but certainly no harm starting early! It all depends what you are trying to accomplish - even tho frankly I’m usually just winging it and seeing how it reacts haha. It is amazing how quickly they tilt back up towards the light tho huh?

@Ezzjaybruh, appreciate the encouragement, I sure hope it clears up. Learning a lot from this experience but will be really bummed if I can't turn things around before harvest. Feels like these deficiencies came out of nowhere and at the worst possible time. Hope things turn around for you as well!

I swear it’s crazy the few times I’ve gone on a vacay for even days while growing, my plants seem to thrive and grow quicker.. probably just in my head but it’s always cool to not see them for a few days and return to see all the growth that has occurred. Looking good tho!

@Ezzjaybruh, you're so right - I had that same thought when I came back and saw the progress. It's kind of a ego-check. Here I am paying all this attention to my plants, thinking I am curating conditions for their optimal growth and then I come back after a few days of basically ignoring them and they look better than ever. I suppose it is called "weed" for a reason. It will grow despite our best efforts...not necessarily because of them haha. Gotta admit the week 8 report for your 5g Zkittlez has me feeling all kinds of impatient. Love seeing those calyxes and sugar leaves starting to frost up... an encouraging sign of things to come!
