Not sure if there is a better method! If you want peace of mind, google tree grafting. People basically cut off a branch of one strain of apple tree, for example, and attach it onto another strain using just tape. The branches fuse together and grow well. :)

I did the same thing and it worked pretty well.
My plant was hitten by a bird which tried to eat her (or smoke ahahah I don't know). She it had been cut in half.
