I have an issue with soil gnats. I have diatomaceous earth in jar lids which is killing them. Is there anything else I should be doing to protect my girls?

12-16 oz coffee cup with 2" of apple cider vinager. (not the white vinager) Add a small drop of dish soap to break surface tension...gnats drown. Nematodes. I use Naturesgoodguys. $10 for a couple million. :) they eat the larve in the soil. Metal halides/HPS lights do a nice job of frying them lol! Cheers!

Hey there Dabby, Soil gnats are quite an easy problem to have, so that's the good news. The best thing you can do against gnats is to stop overwatering, keeping a really strict wet dry cycle basically kills all their eggs because they depend on humidity. So as long as you stop keeping the soil too humid the eggs will survive. The diatomous earth wont take care of that, unfortunately . Usually if you get rid of the eggs the adults end up disappearing. The next thing is to is get them out of there quicker by for example using yellow tape at different places and different heights in the tent. After a while the gnats should disappear by themselves. Hope this helps ! 🚀

Hey Growmie, There are actually a few other things that you can try that are effective, like : Yellow sticky traps Get yellow sticky traps from the garden store and position them around your plants. These traps attract the fungus gnats, which will stick to them. Know that yellow traps alone will not entirely eradicate an infestation. But, they are a good indicator of whether you (still) have fungus gnats and can prevent many of them from harassing your soil. Neem oil If you have a pest infestation, you don’t need to get all hardcore with chemical insecticides. Neem oil can help get your infestation under control. It’s also good as a preventative measure. Treat the top layer of your soil with it to eliminate the larvae. Blow air over the soil A simple standing fan gently blowing air across your soil has lots of advantages. Making life miserable for bugs is one of them. It will also help dry out the soil quicker to eliminate the gnats for good. BT bacteria Some growers know the Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria for getting rid of caterpillars. There is a variety of these bacteria, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, that works for fungus gnats. Just add water. Hopefully, I answered your question and remember Happy Growing and Free your mind one puff at a time.
