Likely have a nest in the soil below, they (termites and some ants) upend debris and put it on the surface. So my previous comment is more a consideration for if you get the same sorts of signs again.
Those be termites if I had to guess.
Kinda as Sackeyko said, I'd recommend a little bit of sprinkled powdered cinnamon, cloves and perhaps cayenne pepper

Glue boards made for rodents... or maybe a torch?! (Dont really torch it lol) could consider predator insects as well excluding spiders, you dont want webs in your smoke
