I would cut the lower portions out and defoliation on any leaves covering bud site unless it is super thick. Then thin out a bit. I don't cut too much out because they are the plants source of energy. Good luck

If you’re in flower, I would wait for two weeks before defoliating.

Week 7 SCROG vs Defoliation question I'm in the middle of week 6 of flower, both strains are expected to finish at 8 or 9 weeks. Plants are crowded. Buds aren't as big as I was expecting. I'm not sure if I should leave the SCROG canopy to boost the crowns, or defoliate to get more light to the lower bud sites.
