Did you water it all, like the whole pot? Usually you’d only water in a very small circle right around where you buried the seed. No more than 100ml should suffice, doesn’t matter how big your pot is.
The thing is young plants don’t use much water so your media will stay wet for a long time which not only can lead to pests and diseases but also overwatering symptoms which are the number reasons for young plants to die.
I guess your seed mat will improve evaporation somewhat so it’ll dry up faster. I would recommend drastically reducing your watering volume and frequency from now on.
As for temperature I do not have a better solution than what you already came up with.
