Plant’s Gender

SlicedPimientos
SlicedPimientosstarted grow question 3 years ago
I’m growing 4 random seeds that are somewhere between 5-15 years old. I don’t know if they’re photos or autos; I don’t know if they’re feminized or not; and I don’t know their strands. My questions: How can I tell my plants gender? What exactly am I looking for and when?

If you go to week 7 in my diary "cannabis conundrums" I have posted pictures of male and female preflowers. This should help you identify your plants once they enter the flowering stage - autos anywhere between 3 and 6 weeks of age and photoperiod plants will only flower if you change the lighting to 12/12, that is, 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness. They will then show their gender somewhere between 1 and 3 weeks after going to 12/12. Start them all at 18/6 and autos should start flowering around the 4th week and if not, go to 12/12 because they are probably photoperiod plants. There is no 100% way of telling their gender until they start flowering, however males usually have less branch development and females will have branches that grow outwards in sync with the plant growing upwards, but not in all cases. Another indicator, but not 100% either, is to look at your plants at night. Females will generally have their leaves folded downwards, while males will keep their leaves more horizontal, but again, not in all cases. Switching on a light or using a flashlight briefly while they are still in vegative growth will not cause any issues, such as hermaphroditism. The greatest risk with random seeds/bag seeds is that they will carry a dominant gene for being hermaphrodites as almost nobody grows pure male plants these days. If you are going to base your entire grow on these random seeds, I would advise against this, far better to buy some quality feminized seeds and grow a couple of the random seeds as an experiment. You certainly do not want to spend 3-5 months growing seeds that may turn into absolute garbage once flowering commences. 4 months of electricity costs to grow un-smokable (and unknown) buds is a risk I would not take! They could also be exceptional and well worth the effort, but I certainly would not "put all my eggs in the same basket"! Hope this helps, Organoman.

Long story short that is a definite answer is when they flower. Males will form sacs, females will shoot pistils for catching pollen. If you got room and want to veg them long break a clone off get it to root just enough and switch them to 12 12 while others veg.

Look at nodes for hairs called stigmas - those are females. Sacs at nodes - males. This is simple info found on Google - images will help more than any explanation can. As for your specific situation. I would be pretty confident they aren’t autos given that they’re 5+ years old. So what I would do is veg like 4-8 weeks in 18 hours of light and 6 off. Then switch to 12 on 12 off. You’ll see signs of sex around 7-14 days after switching light. Remove any males as soon as they’ve been identified.

Hey buddy. There are a few things you need to watch out for. If they are autos you'll know if they start flowering by themselves after 4-5 weeks. Also watch out for pollen sacs on the fems to make sure you don't get Hermies. I'm gonna send you a link. Cause at dif stages depending on what it is, and as you don't know you'll have to watch out for a few things, and keep watching. Also with such old seeds you might run into probs just by itself. Especially if they weren't kept in the right temp conditions between 6-8c. Seeds kept too long out of that temp will bring up a whole host of probs. Tbh, if it's such a mixed bag. I wouldn't feel comfortable adding regs into a mix with fems and autos as if you don't catch the plants sex it'll pol the rest of your plants. So if you are set on doing this, you will need to keep them apart, as simple touching will cross contaminate your fems and autos. For the time and effort you'll be putting in, especially if they aren't grown outdoors I really would think of spending a few $ on new seeds. Anyways this link is a tell all and will help u ID those unwanted males. But with seeds so old the chances of getting runtz or mutated genes/Hermies and so on is extremely increased. Happy growing buddy. https://herbiesheadshop.com/blog/male-vs-female-cannabis
