Compost tea pH

Loserofthemonth
Loserofthemonthstarted grow question 3 years ago
Gazillion recipes on line. But my question is about pH. What should the pH be? Is it advised to try and raise or lower it with G.H. up/ down or try silica or lime. Not finding recipes that cover pH adjustment or concerns. I worry about liquids. I've got a bottle of silca blast.

Maybe you use some other word but i kinda miss the Melasse in your recipe, or is the banana juice instead of that? When growing organic i wouldnt care about the pH so much at all. The pH in the pot should be between 6.5 and 7.5 and if your water isnt in that range i would use lime or blonde turf to adjust it. I wouldnt use anything at all to lower or up the pH of the water. Let the soil do it, with your help (lime/turf)

* once you do find proper dose of acid to add, if needed, it'll be the same each time as long as other factors remain the same... if you change your nutrient mix or even just different concentrations of any part, you'll want to re-test pH, otherwise if these things remain the same, it will be consistent in future too. if it needs .5mL of chosen acid, that's what it'll need each time of that same acid.

think greenorganicgermany sums up the range well... slightly acidic, don't go nuts. distilled white vinegar is another option that is inexpensive and commonly in a home already. Acetic acid is just carbons and hydrogens, so you don't have to worry about any imbalance with nutes. 5% is still fairly strong, and will only need "mL" per liter type dosing.. trial and error. pH scale is log10 -- so 7 is 1:1 h3o+:oh-, 6 is 10:1 h3o:oh, 5 is 100:1 h3o:oh.. etc. and vice versa above 7. What does this mean? it'll change very quickly at first but then will take much more to move the needle the further you go from 7. good products will often be buffered... should take care of it for you. definitely don't overspend on "ph-up" or "Ph-down" products, simply look at their ingredients and it'll be something you can find at supermarket or already in your home. these things are ubiquitous and the active ingerdients are an equivalent to generic Rx.. you can count on them to be equals, if the same molecule. there's no "better" hcl, etc... it's always just hcl (simplified... molarity matters).
