24/7 lighting autos

24/7 lighting on autos?? Thinking of giving it a shot, any reason not to? Would be easier on some of my equipment keeping that stable environment. Not worried about electric usage. How important is a dark cycle?
Solved
Setup. Lighting

it'll only be a net benefit if you light is too weak to provide enough DLI per 24 hours relative to what the plant and your environment will allow. dark periods have benefits... you can only give so many photons per day whether over 16 hours, 18 hours or 24 hours it will add up to the same amount of energy per day (photons per day). So, if you can give 'max' DLI in 18 hours, you won't see any benefit in torchin it another 6 hours or even spreading it out over 24 hours proportionally... probabyl have some tiny negative effect in that case and the 6 extra hours might cause light damage, if providng max dli over 18hours and jsut leaving it on longer. anyway.. if it's a weak light, go for it... if it's proper relative to area of garden, it's probably only going to raise your electrcity bill and potentially damage or less effectively grow your plant. need about 500-600 ppfd over 18 hours for somehwere near 40DLI (find a DLI table - daily light integral).... if your light has an accurate speification for umol/s it's easy to convert to DLI based on size of garden. convert to m^2. 1m^2 / your garden size in m^2 multiplied by you umol/s from light... then use that value in the DLI table with hours of use per day.. you can see hours is 1:1 directly proportional to the resulting DLI.

No, no, no! Darkness is ESSENTIAL for plant health. Plants NEED a dark period to finish their daily photosynthesis cycle and have a correctly functioning metabolism. A plant with an incorrectly functioning metabolism will NEVER grow to its best potential. The MYTH that it is ok to grow plants for weeks/months withour sleep needs to removed from history ASAP! Most people who grow at 24/0 only ever do it once before realizing the mistake they made.

I have no issue with 24-7 lighting for the first 7-10 days especially with autos to get that extra size.. but after a week or two you gotta give them some sleep. I didn’t even read Steve’s answer but knowing my guy - he spoke some knowledge.. and you can get same DLI at 18-20 hours as you could with 24.. I do also understand the draw of having it on 24/7 just for that consistency in your tent with important parameters

@Creepy_Steve, yeah I'm familiar with PAR, DLI, PPFD and it's importance. I've always grown photos so autos are new to me. Using a DLI chart from growlightmeter.com and the photone app to dial in the light. This light seems OK for veg, but am picking up a photontek sq300w in a few weeks time. Should really "brighten" things up in a 3x3 footprint lol. @GrowingGrannie, I KNEW you would answer with some words of wisdom. And for it to be music to my ears?? DONE! Pulling the timer out after typing this so they'll never see darkness. I like a stable environment, and I like your answer.

While it's fairly important to give your plants SOME downtime, when I first started growing, I would run my autos (they're all I grow) on 24/0 lights for JUST the reason you're giving here... I couldn't keep the temps up in my tent any other way. And I got good harvests... Would they have been better had I given them some dark? I have no idea! In order to accurately answer that question, you'd have to run a side-by-side comparison.... two plants, two tents, two lights one of which was running 24/7 and the other giving at least 4 hours darkness every day... I don't feel like running that kind of experiment myself! LOL! You'll find a lot of growers telling you the dark cycle is absolutely imperative... but it's really not... I'd much prefer a stable environment because autoflowers really CAN withstand 100% light for their entire grow... Good luck!

Even autos need a rest period. You will have less problems with the plants when they have a dark period. 20/4 or 18/6 are my preferred cycles.
