That's more of an art than a science trying to guestimate what percentage of trichomes on the plant are amber. focus on the bulk and best buds. don't look at trichomes on leaves. calyxes only. google image search for visual aids. another visual cue is whehther it looks like glass (less ripe) or plastic (more ripe)
