I would advise against using rusted metal for a rig as you want to maintain a steril environment. Rust can attract insects and bacteria and provides a porous serface for mold to cling to. You should change it out for a steril plastic. You can if you don’t want to buy a Scrooge use pvc and fishing line. Hope this helps and good luck!

A simple and non-permanent way to ensure rust won't touch your plants is to surround the metal with plastic (such as heat-shrink seals).
