Seedlings are highly susceptible to dehydration, and losing water faster than they can absorb it can be a quick way to kill them. This can happen due to several factors, including insufficient watering, excessive heat or dry air. Capacity to store water is held in the stem, so until she has capacity to hold more for longer, she runs a fine line between what she spits out and what she uptake, there is little to no room for error. Even a little too much or the hot light beating on the soil can dry those top couple inches very fast, gravity does its best to pull the moisture out of reach creating a potential for quick death. I don't know what your soil composition is, but transpiration is the process responsible for building turgor pressure, it is this counter pressure which is used by the rootzones to penetrate soil search for minerals and water. If it's too low its possible she couldn't penetrate hard compressed soil, but given your experience I doubt that to be a cause. Maybe she just got a little infection?. All I got .

Yes, "damping off". Agree with 101001.........very strange watering methods...........you NEED to water deep.

Hey Growmie, This is a classic case of damping off, a common issue affecting seedlings. It’s caused by fungal or bacterial pathogens that attack young plants at the base of the stem, usually when conditions are too moist and there isn’t enough airflow. The thin, pinched stem you’re seeing is a clear sign of this. It often stems from overwatering, poor soil drainage, high humidity, or using old, unsterilized soil. Weak lighting can also make seedlings stretch and become more vulnerable. Once a seedling has fully damped off and collapsed, unfortunately, it can’t be saved. I had to learn the hard way, too, but with a few small adjustments, you can avoid this from happening again.

Well, i think it was still alive until you uprooted it. If it falls over, prop it up next time until strong enuogh to hold itself up. That's a weird watering pattern... is it possible it's dry around the seedling's taproot? Doesn't look like much water could soak in deeply based on drying pattern. that moisture needs to go all the way down and a smaller pot with fluffier medium wouldn't hurt, either. Taproot didn't get far for being at least a few days above ground...

Why would you want to approach to seedling like that, leaving taproot exposed to the light? It's just a call for problems. Change the approach to avoid any issues in the future.
