Week 5 of Vegetation phase. 4/10/2022: -I was in the tent transplanting the tomato seedlings into larger pots...so I figured it was a good day (a couple down the line from topping) to see how things are progressing. Seem to be overall pretty happy. I got up under each plant and trimmed out another nodes' worth of growth, so we have a bit of room under the canopy to do some work in the next week. Hopefully the new branch sites will continue to extend and expand so that I can maybe tie them down by the end of the week. The idea is that we'll do the two lowers long and wider, then after they have a few nodes I'll terminate them and get 2 colas on each end. the two uppers I'll also train out the same way, terminate and get an additional 2 colas per end. From there I'll figure out which of the inner nodes looks most promising and pick two of those to continue and snip the rest. If all works out, that will end up with 10 good viable colas/bud sites per plant. The idea will be to try to switch to flower soon after I have all the branch/bud sites tidied away so that the plants are pretty low for flower & stretch. -As we enter week 5, it's also time to adjust lighting. While I could just lower the two HLG225's that I've been using, there are three in the tent. Using two but lowering them just makes the light spread less wide, so might as well fire up the 3rd HLG. It will also keep the tent warmer during lights-on and I can downward adjust the RH to maintain a good VPD. Anyway, week 5 and we've upped our DLI to something around ~40.3 and we're at a nice 625umol for PPFD. - Upcoming this week...Blumat Tropf system incoming. With a few extended trips away, even my 4-day watering schedule will be disrupted, so we're gonna try a blumat system. I have a medium 'deluxe' box coming from Sustainable Village, along with a handful of extras (tubing, connects, etc.). I'll be setting this up for not only the two Durban Poisons but also the hot pepper and tomato plants. Hopefully this will be just the thing for my 9 day trip out at the end of the month then a later 10 day out in June. If I really like it, I may just keep it up. I'll be DIYing a reservoir with a quick trip to the Loews for a 12ish gallon tub, and all that. We'll see how it all unfolds! 04/12/2022, Day 37: -Watered & started working on the training. Removed a few lower leaves and cleared the second node. The 3rd and 4th nodes have been bent and trained flat...will push these out a few nodes then will top those ends and remove a bunch of the foliage from the middle nodes down to 10 total colas. Plants remain happy and seem to be taking to the surgery and structure pretty well. - Set up Blumat Tropf system. Currently have 14 carrots, one per each Durban, but then one each for all the tomato and pepper plants in the tent. Once things heat up outside, I'll pull those from the tent and we'll be down to two drippers total (maybe 4, we'll see how I feel about coverage with one dripper. System is easy enough to lay out, though a pain with so many plants. I have a loop with two reservoir outlets, each with a shutoff, and then a bleed/flush valve at the far end of the loop. I did find that one of the inline filters wasn't water-tight and while I tightened it down it still had a very slow leak, so I removed that. Gave the system 12 hours (light) before dialing in the carrot valves so the soil wasn't going to be kept super super wet, but wet enough. I'm sure I'll have to re-dial it in. Tank is 20g but I've currently got 6g of water with ~3mg of MaxiGro per gallon and .5mg of epsom.

What's making these lowers blotchy yellow with some 'rust' spots? Any ideas? I think it's probably a P/K issue, am I underfeeding? Blumat drip system, Promix HP, Maxibloom @3.5g per gal. Ca/Mg @ 5ml per gallon. pH @5.8-6.2.

Hey there LeastExpected, so a few things are happening right now , basically it's from an imbalance in your NPK ratio. in flower you really want something like NPK 4-8-8 , right now you're at something like 2-4-8 , so right away you can tell you're going to be missing phosphorous, so what you're seeing in terms of yellowing is actually signs of K excess as well as P-deficiency. If you can find a way to add P that would help make your ratio better, and the problem will stop spreading almost immediately. Hope this helps ! ๐Ÿš€

@@JerkFlowers, Good luck with yours! So far mine are proceeding as planned. I'm going to try to keep 'em low because they'll probably stretch to fill the entire tent!

Just saw you were gonna add some Epsom salt for mag, do you feel like the mag in maxigro isn't enough?

@LeastExpectedGrower, That makes sense, thank you for the explanation and details. I look forward to seeing your ongoing grow!!

@@JerkFlowers, I've really only just started using the Maxigro...previously I was using GH Trio but moved over towards the end of my last grow. A few longtime growers have suggested .5-1g of Mg weekly wouldn't hurt and I did previously have purple stems (a known sign of deficiency). I previously use Ca/Mg, but I don't think I need extra calcium, given my water starts at ~220ppm. This grow I've now used epsom salts in quantities of .5 and 1g and haven't had any signs of mg toxicity.
