Week 8: So where i live it is typically so dry its insane! We rarely get above 7-15% and that's a good day. However we've had the strong rain storms happening and that's raised our humidity temporarily. However she seemed to have gotten battered more by the wind whipping her around than any rain. I gave her first "top" this week and it went good, no unusually bad side effects that i can see. She is also curving to reach the light, but i will just attempt to keep training her to keep that to a minimal and try upping her direct light hours. I also propped her back straight with the help of a few rocks in her pot. Hopefully this can help keep her more straight or at least get battered less in the future for now. All in all she seems to be doing well, healthy, strong and resilient. Happy Growing Everyone. ✌️

Hey all, so my pistils have had discolored and some dry/shriviled looking tips for a few weeks now. This seems a bit premature to me. You can notice in the 7th pic this week and several the weeks before. Has anyone experienced this, otherwise any possible ideas it could be?Thanks

Hia there @ExperimentGREEN! I looked at the pictures you mentioned and see those pistil tips. Now typically immediately the first think I think of when I see browning Pistil tips that early into flowering (several weeks ago) I immediately think that she has been pollinated and is about to start producing seeds. This would have been my go to answer 2-3 weeks ago because you are outdoors. However if you have not started to see a progression in the Browning and don't see any clear indications of seeds forming then clearly this is not the case 3 weeks later. The second things I go to are the most common things and that is a light burn or heat! You are outside and mention heats pushing 98F that's crazy hot for the plants and this can cause that twisting you see at the tips of the pistils. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do in that case unless you can move them to shade. Just be sure there are no seeds forming and really you should be just fine!! 😎 (Obviously this should go without saying but use the Trichomes to determine the harvest window not the Pistilis)

Hey, So I've been battling low humidity nonstop. Does anyone have advice on how to give a plant extra moisture or trick it into thinking its more humid? Other than building a greenhouse.

You can erect a misting system, like they have on restaurant patios in the summer time. Put it on a timer, and have it go off for 5 minutes every hour or two. It's easier than standing in front of your plant all day with a spray bottle. Or you can water the area around the plant every morning. Or you can set up a soaker hose on a timer to go off every couple hours around the plant. As it warms up the evaporation will raise the humidity. 👅

I've had them turn when they are dry, water and next day back to normal. I'd be worried if they change color in the middle and not the tip.

@Experimentgreen, i'm digging the frost on those fan leaves - did somebody say potency ?? 😂
Experimentgreen
Experimentgreencommented6 years ago
@7th5ag3, you're so awesome for commenting thank you. I live in the hardcore desert, a typical hot season is like 10% humidity and hmm 85-103 F. Im sure my vpd is redzone so that might be the cause. I better stay up on my watering practices.

@Experimentgreen, 20 weeks and counting 😲 What a lovely diary honestly!

HighTVcommented6 years ago
@CRiSPrGrow, haha yeah that's also true! Gas exchanges happen at the stomata not your thermometer lol
CRiSPrGrow
CRiSPrGrowcommented6 years ago
@HighTV, @experimentgreen, a lot of the time when folks do vpd on here, i notice they take their grow room's temperature, but actually you do need a laser thermometer to measure the temperature of the leaves (often a few degrees colder than the room itself), yes, not as easy as it seems....
HighTV
HighTVcommented6 years ago
@Experimentgreen, @bulbi I think the VPD chart is fine by itself as long as you understand the variables at their core. Typically if you are off on one variable you far out of the green because they use variables that are already dependent on eachother - Like Temperature and Humidity. "Relative humidity (RH) is the ratio of the partial pressure of water vapor to the equilibrium vapor pressure of water at a given temperature. Relative humidity depends on temperature and the pressure of the system of interest." So the Chart to new people could imply to get into the green you need to raise your humidity by 10%. But it doesn't say that raising your RH 10% lowers the Air-pressure and in turn lowers the temperature. Long story short - it works to help the last 5%-10% of improvement but the reality is you struggle to meet VPD its not because of a single stat like the chart says- its due to all of the stats and changing one changes the others. (To be honest.. this is honestly probably more a personal vendetta lol but struggling for a good VPD has never been worth it to me )

Lookn good - let the flower show begin! Did DP provide any details to u on expected flowering time?
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommented6 years ago
@Experimentgreen, which only begs the next question then - when’s end of warm season for you guys? I’m gonna assume ur in Cali because it sounds like the opposite of the minus temps climate hell we’re just starting into here 😤

@TheBudWhisperer, so i messed up its shows 7-8 indoor and end of the warm season for outdoor.

@Experimentgreen, I’d probably lean high side of 10 then. Like you said it’s outdoor. Really interesting strain to watch👌🤩. Good luck but I don’t think you’ll need it👍😉

@Experimentgreen, I agree for sure. That said, we should start seeing more as spring turns through May (at least up here of course). That’s gonna include mine and I’ll have a few plants going this year. Can’t freakn wait.👍😎

Experimentgreencommented6 years ago
@TheBudWhisperer, thank you so much. I was so proud of this plant that ill admit i was a little sad when i thought she had lost. 😕 it was the only outdoor to place in February...it's crazy how much more indoors there are than outdoor grows.

Now that you’re flowering the low RH isn’t an issue. Maybe next season if it’s practical a frame and plastic? But that will add heat. No perfect answer. You did great, as expected! Enjoy

Every time a visit this diary EG I get giddy for the outdoor growing season up here. This plant is straight gorgeous. And I couldn’t agree more regarding your thoughts on nutes. I’m trying to stick with one line (botanicare) best I can to truly dial in the avg. limits for feedings. Regardless of indoor or outdoor I want to know what’s the general max because I’d rather be battling a deficiency than a toxicity issue which would simply be harder for the plant to recover from. Great info, great grow! 😎

@TheBudWhisperer, yes please. I'm a reader so anytime someone can suggest something and i have a good chance of it being decent already because they've already read it, I'm all over it.✌️ Thanks my friend, hope you and your wife are having a good new year
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommented6 years ago
@Experimentgreen, that’s cool I’ll prob. Check it out. Had a chat with someone on here about that as well - we tend to make it too complicated sometimes. Plant seed, add water smoke buds! It’s a living thing - to be healthy it requires moderation not excess! If u have an interest in the science behind it I read a good book recently called marijuana cultivation reconsidered by Read Spear. He makes a number of very enlightening observations which even debunk some commonly held beliefs. And thank you for the ear wig tip. They could easily be what was popping the occasional leaf hole last year and my wife hates em so we’ll be giving this a try I think👍. Cheers!

Hey you have impressed me with your yield ! Much love 😚
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommented6 years ago
@Experimentgreen, tried indoor lst techniques on an outdoor myself and wasn’t all that impressed with the results. Almost like you’re growing against the grain and the plants growth should be dictated by the sun to max out its potential. Something to consider anyway...
Experimentgreen
Experimentgreencommented6 years ago
@OutForReal, im gonna have to get real creative with the garden this summer....knowing how much light is available now, I've gotta really rethink some things. Otherwise only plant strains that are good outdoors like the shaman. Maybe if i tie em down and treat them like an indoor that only gets overhead light?

Experimentgreen
Experimentgreencommented6 years ago
@TheBudWhisperer, it's about 12 ounces of buds and another like 2 gallon bags of trim and popcorn. Crazy for how much shade it got. We were at like hmm only maybe 4-6 hours of direct light most of the time, maybe less. There's this big ass tree that seriously has got to go.
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommented6 years ago
@Experimentgreen, my last outdoor was about the same size but in a 10gal. Pot and it was easily gonna push 8oz. +. If you’re in a 15 I gotta say at least 10oz. On a look????? Am I close? If I’m way short that would be awesome and you should consider opening up retail with that kinda supply! Lol

And you tested the trimbag=? pls tell me about it, i recieved mine to late for harvest, never tested at all
Experimentgreen
Experimentgreencommented6 years ago
@Mrs_Larimar, hey lovely lady, i loaded a photo of the actual trimbag results. It's pretty well trimmed but had some large stems that didn't get removed. I think it works best on big buds and when the bag is pretty full...rather than a tiny load.✌️
Experimentgreen
Experimentgreencommented6 years ago
@Mrs_Larimar, so i actually got mine as a tester from one of the people who work there which was very nice of them. It works well if you can have the plants pretty dry and don't mind doing a small finishing trim. It may or may not knock of trichromes in the process and be a little less sparkly.
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommentedweek 266 years ago
My understanding of trichomes is that it’s not entirely confirmed as to their actual purpose in nature. Probably due to the lack of study on the plant as a result of its questionable legality. A lot of what I’ve read though suggests that they may actually be a pest and predator deterrent. The stickiness they create can trap some insects like fly paper (obvious given some of the critters I’ve pulled out before). I’d imagine it’s also not the easiest plant for most herbivores to eat for this same reason. Like eating peanut butter that refuses to dilute in your mouth! Lol. Best I got on the subject so far anyway.😉. Plants looking awesome and u must be getting impatient!👍👌
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommented6 years ago
@Experimentgreen, np and anytime! IMO - outdoor is where you gain the real experience. Think we all often forget that if you want to grow stellar weed you have to appreciate what it means to be a skilled gardener first😉. That lesson took more failed grow attempts for me than I care to admit! Lol!!!
Experimentgreen
Experimentgreencommented6 years ago
@TheBudWhisperer, You rock! That's exactly the answer i was aiming for. It's function as a defense mechanism. Given i do outdoor that's part of my battle, pest management. However my thoughts were that i rarely see any bugs willing to go navigate into my trichromes. I know some pests can manage in there, possibly the ones who move through the stems and such without being noticed with the eye to begin with. I just wanted to see if anyone ever thinks about how useful all the pieces of the puzzle are...beyond their function of getting one stoned or other medicinal aspects. 💚🌱💚 thanks for responding. 😊
Mrs_Larimar
Mrs_Larimarcommentedweek 196 years ago
Again to the problem with dry air,,, as long as the roots have it cool and shady and you give them enough water, i think the plants have no big problem. Are they into the ground or into pots? if they are into pots try to cool the roots https://www.growweedeasy.com/prevent-cannabis-heat-stress-outdoors maybe we can talk per PM... i had this year a very hot summer, i only looked at the thermoeter i di not look at the hydrometer. But i thik if its hot and dry it was similar
Experimentgreen
Experimentgreencommented6 years ago
@Mrs_Larimar, definitely, I'll look at that page link and we'll have to talk shop and trade notes. 💚
Experimentgreen
Experimentgreencommented6 years ago
@Mrs_Larimar, they're in 15 gallon smart pots but the roots are growing into the dirt below.☺️ Im sure all my plants will know is dry air...some will adjust to it and some maybe wont. I might need to research some desert strains rather than jungle strains.
