July 5, 2023 Day 36
I had to drop the light intensity for the 2 large plants in the grow tent.
Light Intensity is now 60%
Happily, that really helps the power consumption, considering I just added another 100 watt light to the smaller tent for Watermelon One.
DLI: 32 mol/m²/d
This week we focus on defoliation and LST adjustments. Both ladies are looking great and are exactly the same size now. However, they're still really short. Around 9" to 10" tall. I'm hoping they take off very soon. We are absolutely in flower now. Maybe very late pre-flower. Either way, she doesn't seem to be stretching at all. Just an inch over last week. But still I have hope. The fact that they are both the exact same, I would expect them both to take off. If not, then I am really confused.
Grow System Environment:

Watermelon One is happy in her own place. She hasn't done much in stretch yet, but she should get there any day now.
Watermelon Two however stretched about an inch last night. Good sign. Watering is great.
Grow System Environment:
Temp: 73.5°
RH: 62.5%

Watermelon One accidentally got topped today. I have concerns. As she is just starting to stretch and it's already the flowering stage. I have another plants that I accidentally broke one branch off and almost a second and the plant is now absolutely massive, so hopefully I'll get the same outcome. Considering the topping I also decided to snip some of the low leaves blocking airflow. And of course, made some adjustments to the tie downs.
Watermelon Two is starting to stretch. She is looking great and has plenty of auxiliary branches coming up. No accidents and she definitely looks like her stretch will be fantastic. I did snip a couple leaves blocking lower air movement and made some tie down adjustments. I've also decided to start rotating 4 times a day to get better light coverage. Other than that, she looks extremely promising.
Grow System Environment:

Both ladies look great. They still aren't really taking off in their stretch, but I think they'll be fine. Watermelon One is really enjoying her own tent. Again, she isn't growing much, but looks like she is prepping to. I'm sure the accidental topping may have a bit to do with it. Watermelon Two also looks poised for her stretch, if they don't start stretching in the next couple of days, I'll be concerned. For now, I'll let them do their thing.
Considering both plants have been trained the exact same way and have even had the exact same leaves snipped, I think this accidental topping will work as a good experiment. To see if just LST is better or worse than LST with Topping. Sweet!
Grow System Environment:
Temp: 75.6°
RH: 60.5%
VPD: 1.19 kPa

Watermelon One is looking good. She has a perfectly flat canopy and great leaf colors. Very healthy plant. I am concerned about her height now. Well, both of their height. They are both the same size and height. Only 10.5" tall. The interesting part is how the topped plant is keeping up with the non topped plant. OR, they are both just slow growers. I also noticed that Watermelon Two is taking more time adjusting to the LST. She's not really growing auxiliary branches like her sister plant.
So far, it seems that the topped plant is actually doing better than the non topped one. Both need the exact same amount of watering today. Also very interesting.
Roots are showing nicely on Watermelon One, but I'm not seeing much on Watermelon Two.
Grow System Environment:
Temp: 79.4°

Watermelon One is doing quite well. Very level canopy. Taking in water slowly. No stretch yet, but I can tell she's getting ready to. I hope she does though. The foliage is starting to get a bit bushy and overlapping each other, so moisture is getting trapped between them.
Watermelon Two looks exactly the same as her sister plant. Same everything. It's really neat seeing two plants grow and look exactly the same. Same phenome. Really fun documenting.
Grow System Environment:
Temp: 76.4°
RH: 58%
VPD: 1.28 kPa

I have concerns about the stretch of these ladies. They haven't stretched at all. They haven't really gotten any wider either. But they are flowering. It looks like full flower as if pre-flower never happened. Weird. Not much I can do about it. At least nothing I know of yet. They look healthy as ever, just not growing much.
Grow System Environment:
Temp: 76.1°
RH: 57.8%
VPD: 1.27 kPa
Watermelon One Environment:
Temp: 73.1°
RH: 60.5%
VPD: 1.11 kPa
Looking for a second, third, forth and so on opinion. One of the plants in this diary is in the tent with a huge Zkittlez Auto. It's really squished in there. Overlapping branches and leaves. How to make it fit? Thanks! Snip outer leaves? Remove tie downs? Let it ride? Thanks!
You can use LST, given that its in flower now and its an auto to much stress can stunt it growth.
Some autos grow massive some don't its a real coin toss. A lot of people prefer photoperiods as you can do almost anything to them in veg and they will recover. HST LST w/e
Good Luck!
There is one auxiliary branch that has weird leaf formations. The rest of the plant is fine. Just the one branch. It's got strange curled leaves. Still green. Tons of trichomes and no pests or anything. Any insight?
3 options, one should be out, because its auto, but i saw many strange autos, so :
1. light leak, some stupid reveg mode at certain point
2. too intense light and heat
3. heavy excess of nitrogen during flower caused it.
This is looking beautiful! Love the red trim on those sugar leaves. I'm wondering why the RH is 57.5%? Haven't seen this so late in flower before and would love some insight. From a noobie growmie, great work!!
@Prilyfe13, Ah I understand! I'm also fighting high humidity with season change occurring. I've got a portable heater in my environment and that has been a bud-saver. Not sure if that's something you can incorporate - keeping temp under ~79C?
Thanks so much for your response, and again - congratulations on the grow thus far, it's incredible!
@MMSC16, Thanks! These ladies are definitely pretty. The RH is not on purpose. I'm fighting super high humidity at home. I'd much rather it be around 50% if not 45%. I just record what my averages are for the week. So far, I haven't seen any issues. Flowering is slow, so it might be the RH? Not too sure to be honest. Thanks again!
Evoluciona con un colores preciosos!
No te preocupes en dejar un par de semanas más a la planta numero 2
Seguramente te recompensará con unos cogollos bien duros!
