the healthier the planat, the easier it is to clone. So if you take cutting from light-stressed areas, it may not be as high of a success rate as expected.
do you want to regrow the plant? you can also just prun some bits off and throw it out. i'd only do this at certain points in time.. if you do this AFTER the bud sites have mostly formed you are basically pruning off waht should be the best buds and severely reducing yield... if you do it early enough in the formation of buds, the plant can adjust properly and probably mostly make up for what is lost. "backbuilding" is a hit or miss technique. I've seen it work okay and i've seen it not have any effect, lol. Even when it worked i probably lost a bit of yield, but the plant at least tried to compensate.
take clones anytime you want.. if slightly stressed and you need to guarantee survivors, take more than you normally would to ensure 1 or more do survive.
if this is 100% about beign too tall, just snap the stems and HST. you weaken a point in stem where it'll bend over 90degrees - with as minimal of damage as possible to accomplish that feat. it may need support the first 24h, but after that you'll probalby need to tie it down to prevent it from slowly trying to go back upright. try to visualize the pattern if you ahve to HST a bunch of colas.. don't want them overlapping each other etc...
