How much to defoliate?

How many leaves do you take off defoliating? Some people say a few and I see some people take of alot in a hit.. what's good for autos?

Defoliation doesn't look necessary here. When I defoliate, I start with a pass of selective de-leafing, where I remove leaves that directly cover, or shade bud-sites. Then I'll thin out what looks to be restricting airflow, and light, to the mids.
With less intense lighting, growth will be more stretched out between its nodes - almost as if already defoliated, that's why I say it's not needed here.

Big fan leaves on top that are blocking branches, and molted/old leaves on bottom. Prune off any budlets that are too low on plant. Remove any auxiliary growth that can only support a tiny nug. Maybe a few leaves in middle if it is all bunched up. Improve airflow through plant and around colas as well as light penetration. Don't cut off more than 1/3rd or you can cause it to go into shock and lose a day or two of final growth. General rule, not a law
