@BillMonroe! I always top at node n°3. With autos, I top the 3rd node as soon as it is old enough to be cut properly (Usually by the end of week 2). With photoperiodic strains, I let the plant grow the 4th and even the 5th node, before topping at the 3rd one. This way, the recovery is much faster and you don't see any negative effect / stunt growth. Pruning what's left under your topping is up to you, I do it with photos, and usually avoid to do it on autos. Hope this will help, keep us up-to-date and happy growing 👊
