you can use apical dominance to control canopy. let some weaker growth gain dominance and grow faster, then tie her down when appropriate, if a keeper. i'd only remove a leaf for a very spcific reason. buds don't need light, but local leaves do.. so you prevent stretch by making sure leaves have light.. sometimes you'll remove a leaf off the top to prevent unwanted stretch just below... simply have a good reason and you'll get better at choosing over time.
a lot of this depends on what your intentions are. as long as ties don't cut through the plant, they are fine.
Have a plant to fill the area, get to X number of vertical shoots, and get her into bloom when roughly 1/2 the area is filled. my plants fill roughly a 15x15 space each nowadays.. 6-7 vertical shoots is all i want per plant. 4x plants fill my 30x30 slot(s) in bloom box. ~6"x6" per cola? if you have extremely large colas, may need more.. you'll get thicker, deeper buds if you don't try to overcrowd.
