DWC Rooting Issue

InstantT33started grow question 4 years ago
My roots won’t survive more than a day once they grow past the net pot and into the bucket. The few I’ve seen are just gone the next day. Should I be giving nutrients to help with growth? She looks yellow, maybe start giving a 1/4 strength dose of nutrient solution?

I would step back and root out your seedling more before you place it in to dwc system. E.g., sow in rock wood or jiffy and let it root out to a few sets of leaves. Then place into System. Trying to root a fragile seedling in your system could be stressing it out big time. Doesn’t need any nutrients yet.

I think I should clarify a little, my roots never actually touch the water inside the bucket. So I haven’t started running the pump yet. @HighAltitudeOrganics I think your spot on with rooting her out and letting her grow before putting her in the net pot. @Shagrath I did not soak the clay pebbles in ph’d water, I just rinsed them. Maybe that is part of the issue as well. @Mosherd7 I have to manually water so a simple irrigation system would be ideal. She may be getting too dry as I’m only able to water once a day.

Hello, is your air pump powerful enough? What is you PH and EC? if your tap water is bad, use bottle of water, and try something like oxyboost or great wite powder to have a clean water without oxygen issues. And try a root stimulant, I use plagron use stimulant with oxyboost and my roots are strong.

Hi! Do you have enough aeration in the water? I always put some nutrients in the water when I start my DWC and I'm aiming to 0.7-0.9 Ec. Some people say they don't need nutes at first but to me this has worked great, so yes maybe try adding little bit of nutrients Also it is good practice to keep the pellets wet manually at first so she wont dry out. You can take water with a cup and pour it to the clay pellets and that jiffy like once or twice a day. Also did you pre soak your clay pebbles in pH balanced water at first? They are buffering the solution towards more neutral naturally and they might need soaking to get the desired pH to stay so it might be a problem too.

Havnt done DWC yet personally so just food for thought. You should use nutrient water and a drip system to water right on that jiffy plug your seedling is in Id say. Even if its 1/4 str. That being said them pellets can usually sustain them longer than that with nutrients. So thinking the pellet keeps drying out quickly? Are you just watering or do you have a drip or pump set up?
