PH bouncing around

DWC PH bouncing wildly. Yesterday, brought PH down from 6.4 to 5.7 using Growth Technology PH Down. Today: 6.6. Nothing added in between. Only things in DWC is air stone, nutrients, roots. What causes this? Should I worry? Tap water is soft (hardness 1.6) with a PH of 7.3.

In an ideal DWC setup you will set your ph to 5.8 and let your ph swing back up too 6.2. Some nutrients/micros/macros can only be absorbed at a specific ph levels in the range of 5.8-6.2, so allowing it to swing let’s all of them get absorbed. You should see your Ec drop slightly during this time as well. This will mean your plants are up taking the nutrients and water and all should be good. If your Ec rises instead of drops then you are feeding too much and the plants are only taking water and expelling nutrients instead, and you would likely see ph drop instead of raise. So drop your ph to 5.8 and watch your Ec. You should be checking every day and dropping your ph with ph down or something once it hits 6.2. Once you get these numbers correct then you should be smooth sailing. If it jumps drastically overnight then you may have a water issue. Tap water will spike usually during the first day or 2, because of chemical reactions going on in the water from the oxygen and Co2 injection into the water from your air stone. So if your ph swings are happening mainly after you add or change water then it may just be this and no big deal if you stay on top of it. Letting your tap water sit for 24hrs to release chlorine will help with this as well. Hope this helps in some way. Cheers 💨

Is there a lot of air being pushed through your res? The amount of air moving through the water will have an effect of ph swing, if you want to try a cheap and easy experiment, put a regulator or flow control on your air line, and try reducing the amount going through your res.......just not so much that you lower your O2 too much. Happy growing.

This is usually a sign of nutrient issues. Check your EC. You want it to remain as level as possible. If it's dropping like crazy then you need to add more nutes and your pH will usually go up as EC drops. Organic nutes also seem to be worse at buffering pH levels, so if you're trying to do an organic DWC grow, that could be it too.
