I bought directly from Mars USA (NJ) and I think it may have been a return and be defective.
Mars Specs: Place 24" above sprouts. Had to move to 13" to stop stretching.
9 day old plants look healthy with several sets of new leaves.
Am I paranoid or should I send it back?
This lamp has poor cooling and not high-quality diodes. For this lamp, such a strong heat is the standard, I don't know why they're so popular.
I would replace it with a quantum board 288 (samsung lm 301)
Oh, make sure you dont have it too close or youll stress the seedlings, according to Mars its at like 800ppfd @ 12" so you might end up frying them, I'd say try 40cm and see how they get on, seems to be the most common height for seedlings with them
Ive just got one, absolutely no where near as hot as the CFL I was using, housing temperature probably about 40-50oC and my CFL was running at about 90oC, pretty sure it's absolutely fine mate.
Those models are fanless and passively radiate heat upward. The hood basically doubles as a massive heat sink. If you're concerned, a small fan blowing across would help but if you plan on installing exhaust that is likely good enough.
Nothing unusual, everything is normal. Seedlings tend to stretch to the light not because the light is too far away but because there’s no airflow (no wind) in your environment.
