MH, HPS distance?

So i am reading diaries that are using MH & HPS lights and Seeing a Distance of 10-18 inches from plant. Are people really putting them that close during flowering stage?

Spider Farmer driver failure. LED HELP. Should've went HLG.Ok this is hard. Sf 4000 driver failure & idk what I did lol. Plugged into extensions and a surge protector but aside from flipping a fuse every once in awhile this came out of nowhere. Any help would be great or even just where to start. Lighting Wow. Thank you so much for the reply. I have been playing with LUX meter app and my light. I was bit skeptical about the lumens that I would get from the 15W but as it turns out, it receives well enough ppfd. Still skeptical about the spectrum i am having.
