What you did is similar to a FIM (Fuck, i missed!) cut... except some ppl do this intentionally.
it's possible you damage the node 'just' enough to cause auxin to be diverted below (growth hormone) and still get the growth at terminal that you mutilated. So you end up with 3-4 shoots instead of just 2 after a top. I'm not a fan of it, personally. either way, the plant will survive, not too big of a deal.
If you feel the nodes are too tight, give a little weaker light early on next time before ramping up to full power. This will allow a longer internode to develop. allow that space between nodes (internode) to guide your light intensity choices.
Topping *can diminish yield. Potentially could increase it too. Pretty sure nobody has done a scientific experiement with a control group to really understand all the probabilities, but they will be confident bout varied opinions, nonetheless.
it's dangerous for autos, because they are on a genetic timer. Stress can cause it to get stunted or bloom to go off early and both would diminish yield. Genetics wil play a huge role on whether you should or should not top and that's difficult to predict by just looking at a seedling or plant.
