Why is the Tonic Ryder so much smaller than the GG#4 even though i started them on the same day in the same earth? Is it a function of the different genetics or am I screwing up?

It's all about the genetic , some strains are slow to start and some are slow to finish. Some strains are more vigorous than the others but it is not really a clue about the size of the future trees : the smaller could become the bigger

You are correct it's genetics. Tonic Ryder might be a slow starter. I would not worry about it but if it does shorter than the gg#4 just put a book or something underneath container to keep top of plants even receiving the same amount of light.
