Hydroponic or soil - differences in taste?

kohlrabi
kohlrabistarted grow question a year ago
From what I can see on this website, hydroponic systems tend to give greater yields than soil-grown projects. However, I also read that the aroma is not as rich. Did someone here try to grow the same strain once in soil and once hydroponic and can give a personal taste review?

I can give you an opinion as to soil Vs coco, but haven't done a hydro grow due to space restrictions. it's gotta be strain for strain comparison too otherwise youll be dealing with too many influencing factors... Even plant by plant, genetics play a role, so two seeds from the same bank could be wildly different plants. My opinion is Coco > soil. I had more control over nutrients, pests, and airflow to the roots. Coco is also reusable/washable. Too many variables with different soils... I always had a problem! Flavour-wise, I think as long as you're getting proper and long flushes, there ought not to be too much difference. With hydro it is a constant feed, so less likely to get peaks and troughs in feeding and watering, potentially maximising yields. My two cents as well is that folx doing hydro tend to be using a lot more nutes and additives in general, which will certainly play a part in final product aroma whether you flush or not...

That's why you can't properly vertically farm vegetables, they taste diminished, mostly why you only do simple greens or vine. What you should strive for if you want true quality/taste difference is to do an organic grow. Plants with flowers require a more complex combination of nutrients that cannot up-take through water alone. I recommend "Stepwell SuperSoil" 100% organic so long as you do 7+ gallon, start to finish, 0 nutrients Throw in a bag of "Azomite" too. Whitest ash you have ever seen, snow white.

I honestly find the best terps in hydro, anecdotal to my dozens of grows but there’s my 2 cents..

I’ve done both and prefer soil just because I hate changing and PH-big water constantly. That being said, my hydro grow had way better yield AND better terps. I use floraflex for soil and hydro— so maybe that helped? Good luck! Try it! ✌️🏻💚🌿💨
