Well, I'm a little old fashioned, I guess. The way I look at light questions is this: when you grow outdoors, the seed germinates and from there on the plant is exposed to 100% of the sun's light... so all my plants are given 100% of my lights for their entire life. I look at the plant itself to tell me what the best distance away from the plant the lights should be.... if the nodes are stacking up on top of each other (too close), then I move the lights away to encourage stretch... if the plants are getting leggy (nodes far away from each other), I move the lights closer... if I worry the plant might be burnt from the lights being too close, I stick my hand right over the plant to see how hot the lights are - if the back of my hand feels it's too hot, I move the lights away, if it's an ok temperature I revert to looking at the stretch or lack thereof....
Good luck!
