1st grow -4x4 with 480w Fc-e4800 in early veg (auto) but I am very confused on light distance and dimmer %. Apart from recommended distances, can someone point me to how I can establish the correct height and dimming % required based in the grow cycle? Currently at 30% & 55cm

Well, I'm a little old fashioned, I guess. The way I look at light questions is this: when you grow outdoors, the seed germinates and from there on the plant is exposed to 100% of the sun's light... so all my plants are given 100% of my lights for their entire life. I look at the plant itself to tell me what the best distance away from the plant the lights should be.... if the nodes are stacking up on top of each other (too close), then I move the lights away to encourage stretch... if the plants are getting leggy (nodes far away from each other), I move the lights closer... if I worry the plant might be burnt from the lights being too close, I stick my hand right over the plant to see how hot the lights are - if the back of my hand feels it's too hot, I move the lights away, if it's an ok temperature I revert to looking at the stretch or lack thereof.... Good luck!

I have this same light. I don’t run autos but this is probably appropriate for seedlings.. assuming you’re on 18/6. DLI is more important to know than just umols/m2/sec on its own.

Check the lights par map and make adjustments based on the recommendation along with the way your plants react. Some basic guidelines that can be used are: Seedling - 200-400 ppfd Veg- 400–600 ppfd Flower - 600-900 ppfd So for example (totally making up these numbers) if your light gives off 1000 ppfd at 100% and 55 cm you should turn it to around 30% to achieve around 300 ppfd. It’s not perfect but it’s a good way to get started. You can also adjust the height of the light to achieve higher or lower ppfd.
