When does the grow clock start?

What is the consensus on the start date for vegetative weeks? Is it when the seeds pop, or when the sprouts emerge from soil? I'm getting conflicting answers ... and it almost seems like it changes my whole schedule of expectations, especially comparing to others' diaries.

Slightly confused here because different websites gives you different start dates , the same like grow apps that "autofollow" your strains. Week 1 of Veg should by books and other plants starts with true leaves , but that would mean I would have to turn my weeks back 1 down 5 Days Germ - 1'st week starts .. I would say..

i do not presoak and count first 7 days since seed touched soil as germination week, rest veg till 12/12 flip, then flower. but everyone counts diferently, its absolutely irrelevant.

When the seed emerges, it has to prepare for vegetative growth. That's why for the first 2 weeks it looks like the growth is stunted and most new growers think something is wrong.......nothing is wrong and everything is right. It's anchoring itself into the soil with it's tap root, and then it begins forming roots that branch off the tap root and begin to explore the soil. That's truly when vegetative growth and begin to take place.

I wouldn't fixate on weeks in veg grow at your own pace read the plant . Don't over feed it keep the pH in check. Pick the the pot size you want and grow a strong root system . Then flip when they're ready. Remember to leave a little room for the stretch in flower.

There is no written law, that sets the definition when something happens. I agree with Organoman, that day 1 of veg is when you can see the first true leafs.

Once the seedling sprouts out of the soil and the first pair of true leaves emerge is when I classify that life has begun and this is when "veg" starts in my mind.

I think most would say vegetative starts as soon as the seed breaks the surface/the sprout is planted with leaves above the grow medium. But I don't think there is any truly concrete answer/definition. Don't get stuck on comparing your grow to others. Sure, there's things you can learn from looking at other diaries, but every seed is going to be slightly different and every setup is going to be slightly different. Stay focused on making sure your plants are healthy and their needs are met. Many people ruin their grows by pursuing optimization when they should be establishing their baseline.

The seedling stage is when you only see 2 leafs.. and until you see what I can the split..a new set of leafs beginning the set of nodes/leafs that grow the other way. 7-14 days In high temp co2 I've had seedlings flip into veg within 4 days

seedling is part of vegetative phase. It's in that phase until it experiences a long dark period which causes a hormonal response inside the plant to shift gears from growing leaves and stem elongation to growing flowers. Within 24-48hours if i don't give a plant full light it stretches. So, i don't give a shit if it's a "seedling" or "mature" vege plant. What it needs is more important than a label. These early plant labels are abstract ideas to help grasp what's going on and not too important beyond that generalization.
